12 Date Ideas To Try Before The End Of Winter

Stop with the Netflix and *chill* dates, guys. We know it’s cold but that’s no excuse to get lazy with your dates. To help up your dating game, we’ve teamed up with The Big Sick (aka this season’s ultimate date night flick) to round up Auckland’s best winter dates. Here’s where to woo your lover over the chilly season.

See The Movie Of The Season

Put on your snuggliest coat and make a beeline for the cinemas—there’s a lol-worthy rom-com calling your name. The Big Sick tells the story of Pakistan-born comedian Kumail, falling for grad student Emily after a one-night stand. Don’t go thinking this one’s best suited to female audiences—we’ve heard of multiple boyfriends laughing harder than their dates. Trust us when we say: this one’s a must-see.

Grab A Cocktail (Or Two)

Who doesn’t love an old-fashioned date at a bar? Auckland is filled with perfect places to grab a drink… or two. Get amongst island vibes at the newly opened The Lula Inn or keep things classic with much-loved Bedford Soda & Liquor. Grab your man or woman and drink your way through delicious cocktails. One drink, two straws... you get the drift.

Take A Trip To The Theatre

Q Theatre, ASB Theatre and The Civic are offering up some awesome shows this winter. A trip to the theatre is sure to win you some brownie points with your date—they’ll be impressed at how cultured you are. We’re nabbing tickets for Benjamin Henson’s The Effect and Auckland Theatre Company’s Nell Gwynn.

Treat Their Sweet Tooth

Let’s be honest, the best date nights involve chocolate. For a one-way ticket to your date’s heart, treat them to Milse’s three-course dessert degustation. For something a little more low-key—but equally delish—visit Circus Circus and indulge in their chocolate fondue for two. Your date will think you’re a total sweetheart (pun oh-so intended).

Share A Laugh

Laugh yourself warm this winter with some of Auckland’s funniest names performing laughter-inducing shows on the reg. The Classic’s weekly timetable is jam-packed with hilarious shows and check out The Basement’s signature Snort show for some next-level improv. Sharing a laugh with your partner makes for the perfect date.

Wander The Art Gallery

Peaceful and full of art––sounds like our kind of place. Take a trip to Auckland’s Art Gallery to check out what this landmark has on offer. Wander the stunning building as you discuss your favourite pieces with your partner—you could even play a version of Where’s Wally? No need to rug up for this one—it’s all indoors.

Take A Trip To Paris... In Auckland

When it comes to romance, the French know their stuff. Therefore, Auckland’s very own La Cigale French Market is sure to charm your significant other. Held every weekend in Parnell, hold hands as you sample some of the city’s finest eats. Trust us when we say: almond croissants are the way to the heart.

Light Up The City

Some say pink is the colour of love… and love is most certainly in the air on this date. Take a stroll on Auckland’s Light Path—that pink inner-city pathway that features on nearly every Aucklanders ‘gram. Don’t let the rain get between you and this date—it’s the perfect excuse to snuggle up under an umbrella together. Finish off with a cocktail and so you can legitimately sing “if you like piña coladas and getting caught in the rain”.

Be A Cheap Date (In A Good Way)

Auckland is filled with cheap eats, and let’s be honest—cheap take-out is most definitely the key to our heart. Take your pick from Auckland’s vast range of foodie spots. We’re talking Better Burger, Tiger Burger and Barilla Dumplings (you can’t go wrong with a classic).

The Good Ol’ Dinner Date

For a dinner date to remember, we suggest checking out Kiss Kiss in Balmoral—it’s a golden location name for your date. Indulge in some of Auckland’s best Asian fusion and, if all goes well, pop on over nearby Capitol Cinema to watch The Big Sick. Opt for this gem of a date and things are sure to end with a kiss (kiss).

Swim With Sharks

Kelly Tarlton’s is totally your chance to re-enact a cheesy rom-com this winter. While this gem has been around for aaages, it still remains a classic. Penguins, sting-rays and sharks—oh my! If your date is an adrenaline-seeker, sign up to swim with the sharks themselves.

Drink Mulled Everything

Mulled wine is basically compulsory at this time of year—it is the perfect drink to accompany a chilly night out. For the best winter warmers, check out our mulled wine round-up. If you’re not into vino, The Garden Shed serve mulled apple crumble cider at their beautiful restaurant. We’re definitely third-wheeling this date.
