5 Cafes And Restaurants To Visit This Weekend

Oh how we love you, weekends! You bring the promise of the best things in life: sleep-ins, catch-ups, Netflix binge-watching and—of course—eating! To ensure you only eat the best of the best, we’ve found five snazzy places for you to check out this weekend.

The Chipper

Fact: weekends are better when fish and chips are involved. Get your Friday night takeaway fix from Hillsborough’s The Chipper to ease your way into the weekend. The upmarket f’n’c shop dishes up only the freshest of fish and the chunkiest of chips. At The Chipper you can choose to have your fish beer-battered, panko crumbed or grilled. They’ve got all your classic sides (battered sausages, mussels, scallops and potato fritters) and their burgers are better than your average—anyone for a charcoal beer burg with streaky bacon and jalapeño?

Epolito’s Pizzeria

Grey Lynn

Our hearts broke when Epolito’s Pizzeria shut up shop in One Tree Hill. But fear not, they’ve been going strong on Grey Lynn’s Richmond Road for the best part of a year now. And, if you haven’t visited yet (shame on you), this weekend is your chance. At the helm of the pizzeria you’ll find Chicklena Rosa—a fourth generation Italian who grew up in the Big Apple—who has been making pizza since she was 13. We vote you feast on their New-York style Corleone pizza topped generously with pepperoni, sausage, meatball and streaky bacon.

Onehunga Café

If you’re up for braving Dress-Smart this weekend, why not grab a bite to eat from nearby Onehunga Café? Pop in before hitting the shops and devour crispy chicken waffles topped with fried egg, chilli maple syrup and maple butter—oh my! For lunch we’re all about their pork belly po’ boy and pulled brisket burger. And, come dinner, you’ll find us chowing down on garlic and ginger prawns from their grazing menu. Good times are guaranteed at this friendly suburban local.

Food Truck Garage

Auckland City

Not sure where to take your vegetarian pal this weekend? Visit the cool peeps at the Food Truck Garage. Here, vegetarians can eat in harmony with meat-eaters (vegan, gluten-free and dairy-free kids are also catered for). Their delish menu features burgers, tacos, salads and their ever-popular burrito bowl that comes with either chicken, prawns or vegan nut mince. Don’t leave without trying their kumara fries. Served with date tomato ketchup, they’re a top contender for the best fries in town!

Takapuna Beach Café

We’re all about getting our outdoor weekend walks in before the weather turns to crap and we’re forced to resort to the treadmill *shudders*. Enjoy a weekend stroll along the North Shore Coastal Walkway before nipping in to Takapuna Beach Café to refuel. A favourite with the locals, the café has a damn mouth-watering menu starring the likes of a courgette omelette, smashed eggs with avo and—our fave—an Agria potato rosti stacked high with ricotta, courgette, pickles and a poached egg. Grab a gelato on your way out—we’re a sucker for a double scoop of their salted caramel and chocolate honeycomb.
