5 Of The Best Free Cooking Apps

cooking apps

Sometimes, actually, quite regularly, we fancy ourselves as master chefs, and like to cook up a storm in ze kitchen. If you're anything like us, you spend more time agonising over what to cook than you do actually cooking. We've taken one for the team and have narrowed down the ininite list of cooking apps that are out there down to our favourite five. They're all FREE, and available on Android and iOS.

Big Oven

Hailed as the godfather of cooking apps, we’d be absolute chumps to leave Big Oven off the list. With over 250,000 recipes stored within it, Big Oven allows you to search by keyword, course, ingredient or collection.

What we like best: A leftovers feature lets you enter up to 10 ingredients in your pantry and then the app suggesting recipes for you whip up, without the need for nipping out for some obscure ingredient. How very clever!

Yummly

Perfect for the indecisive, the time-poor and the picky, Yummly puts hundreds of thousands recipes in your pocket, and is updated regularly with more. The filters that are available allow you to find exactly what your looking for in a flash.

There’s also a shopping list feature…. Hello penny saving trips to the supermarket!

What we like best: You can receive recommendations based on your tastes.

Epicurious

If it’s new recipes that you’re after, all sorted in to perfect, easy to navigate categories, then Epicurious is where it’s at.

It’s super easy to navigate (seriously, Nanna will want in on this one) and it allows you to save any recipes from anywhere on the web— perfect for next time you stumble across some epic recipe on an obscure blog that you simply HAVE to cook

What we like best: There’s a seasonal ingredient finder and a hands-free cook mode.

Gourmet Fast

My personal favourite, Gourmet Fast is the app from the good folks at Gourmet Traveller.  It’s a simple app, but the imagery is beautiful (obviously) and the recipes are all super drool-worthy. The recipes are split in to categories and you can create a shopping list of the ingredients you need in a single click.

What we like best: There’s a function that allows each step to be read out to you—perfect for wet or sticky cooking fingers.

Taste

Another media site that’s branched out into the app-osphere, Taste has taken all those recipes that we rely on and whacked them in to a super nifty little app. There are over 40,000 recipes available and a ton of content that you’ll only find on the app. You do have to enter a few details, BUT… it asks you some super helpful questions, ie. How much time do you spend cooking? How healthy are you? And do you have kids at home? The result is nothing short of love at first sight.

What we like best: The timer function…. No more burnt mishaps!
