While we can’t say much for the weather this February, we can sure say a lot about the fabulous new openings that popped up across Auckland.
Foodies rejoice because your taste buds will be thanking you as you tick them off one by one!
The Junction Eatery
Shore locals rejoiced in unison when cafe-cum-bistro threw open the doors of The Junction Eatery in Birkenhead this month. Owner Chris Jones was determined to create a venue that meant locals didn’t need to travel to Takapuna or over the bridge just to find a decent cup of coffee and a bite to eat...and he did just that! With an all-day breakfast and lunch menu, that moves into delicious dinner eats, this is one eatery you’ll be happy to dine at morning, noon and night!
Parnell has secured its place as one of the must-visit ‘burbs of Auckland with the opening of Winona Forever. This lofty space is filled with glorious sweet and savoury treats in their cabinet, but if you’ve got time to sit down for a meal, you won’t be disappointed. You’ll find their specialty French toast eton mess with gin raspberry compote as well as the classic caramel slice to fight those hunger pains. Pretty as a picture and oh-so delicious, you need to get there stat!
Nitro Cow, you had us at gelato! But Aucklanders were in for an even bigger thrill with this food truck adding some serious cool—liquid nitrogen. Yep, rather than the usual cartons or cones, Nitro Cow serves up made-to-order creations, including their infamous Dragon’s Breath, which is liquid nitrogen gelato balls that dissolve when eaten. Yum!
Pastrami & Rye
If you’ve ever been to New York, heck, if you’ve ever watched a movie based in New York, then you know that the Big Apple is a sucker for a good sandwich—and so are we. This February saw the opening of Pastrami & Rye, a NY-style sandwich bar beating those cravings with delicious French bread, cheeses and pastries. Open from 7am to 7pm, Pastrami & Rye is an eatery we’ve been waiting for!
Mars Salt And Sweet
Planning a picnic? Need an ice cream after your swim at the beautiful Pt Chev beach? Then Mars Salt and Sweet is your new go-to. This boutique grocer stocks cheese, pate, cured meats and even pies from Heaven Scent. Their ice cream comes from Matakana’s Charlie’s and is exactly what you need for these warmer days.
West Auckland’s growth as a foodie destination just keeps growing. February saw the introduction of permanent pop-up Etxeberria, housed in the Woodworks cafe on Great North Road. With influences from Spain and South America, this sleek restaurant is the brainchild of Javier Carmono, former executive chef of Beirut, Mexico and Oaken. Tastes include crispy sago and cricket flour chips, ceviche, tender pork belly and goat’s milk ice cream with candied sweet potato. We’re sold!
