Auckland is loaded with awesome places to hit up for a bite to eat or a drop to drink, and we love rounding up these places to share them with our fellow Jafas. We’ve rounded up a bunch of places that bring next-level awesome to our big city’s gastro scene. That’s right, we’re bringing you Auckland’s best themed joints. These are just the kind of fabulously themed places to hit up when you need a bit of fun in your tum.
Cakes n Ladders
You only need two things to help you build a sky-high Monopoly empire—cake and coffee. That’s a fact. Cakes n Ladders is Auckland’s only café dedicated to playing board and card games. It’s exactly the kind of place you could spend all day aiming for that triple word score and devouring a slice of cake. Here you’ll find one heck of a selection of board game. In fact, we heard that there’s a whopping 365 games to chose from—that’s one for everyday of the year!
Roll up, roll up to one of Mt Eden’s hottest brunch spots. With its fun and funky carnival vibes, it’s fair to say that Circus Circus has become a bit of an institution in Mt Eden. They sure don’t clown around with their nosh or coffee grinds here—let us tell you that everything they make is de-lish and will leave you licking your plate. Open early to late every day of the week, you can expect top-notch brekkie, lunch and dinner under one big top.
The Cat Lounge
In life, people fall into two categories: 1) cat people or 2) completely misguided dingbats. If you’re a kitty-lover then a visit to The Cat Lounge will be a warm and fuzzy dream come true for you—or an utterly life changing experience if you fall into the latter category. Here you’ll be able to enjoy your caramel slice or hot choccy while making some new fluffy friends. Sooo many warm and fuzzy feels.
The Fairy Shop Café
Whoever started the rumour that there’s no such thing as fairies clearly hasn’t payed The Fairy Shop a well-deserved visit. Head on over to this magical, sparkly and downright fabulous Ponsonby Road icon and brace yourself to be hit with a whole lot of nostalgic feels. You’ll find food here fit for both big and small princesses and princes like jam and cream scones, cupcakes, toasties, bagels and slices galore! Make sure you keep an eye out for the majestic fairies themselves who are known to grant magic wishes and paint faces. Ps, brace yourself for glitter overload.
After a long day at work, or roaming the prairies, nothing beats stopping by the saloon for a refreshing drop to drink or a little (or big) nibble. As the name might suggest, this gastropub is decked out in true cowboy-chic style— think cowhide chairs, rustic wood and buffalo horns casually hangin’ about. And it gets better because there’s a hearty western menu to match. There’s pizzas (with funky names ranging from Ponsonby cowboy to Chuck Norris), loaded sandwiches and plenty of bar bites to fill your belly right up!
Oysters, shrimp cocktail, calamari, market fish—you name it, if it lives under the sea, Swasbucklers dishes it up! With an impressive menu, this place is any seafood fan’s dream come true. Decked out in true pirate style, you’ll feel like you’re dining in the captain’s cabin. We reckon that if the Krusty Krab ever set up shop in Auckland, it would look a little something like this.
Tree houses are rad—it’s safe to say we can all agree on that. What’s even better than tree houses you ask? The answer: dining in one. Yep, that’s right, just north of Auckland all your childhood dreams can come true at Redwoods Treehouse. Open for special and corporate events, this wooden pod lets you dine in style a whole 10 meters up in the treetops.
Where do you think the great Mr Gatsby would go for a relaxed evening of fabulous cocktails? Lucky for us Aucklanders the answer, Montage Bar, is in our backyard! Set in the foyer of an 1930’s cinema, this Point Chev gem oozes eclectic and glamourous vibes of bygone eras. We guarantee that you’ll feel just dapper sipping on your scarface or shrek bubblegum cocktails (yep, those are legit names).
