Auckland’s Best Cafes For Groups

Generally speaking, brunch is an occasion to be shared with one or two of your nearest and dearest. However, sometimes your extended squad wants in on the action. In these instances, you need a spot that caters to the masses—without compromising on quality eats. Fear not! That’s when we, The Urban List, come in (not all heroes wear capes, y’know?). Here are eight Auckland cafes perfect for groups.

The Garden Shed

Mt Eden

There’s plenty of room for activities at the much-loved The Garden Shed. Not only do they have seating out front and inside, there’s also a large open courtyard adorned with a whooole lot of pot plants. Their shared platters are topped high with paté, charcuterie, empanadas, spiced chicken and onion rings—perf for feeding the masses. The friendly local also takes group bookings.

Red Shed Palazzo

Nestled in a garden setting, Red Shed Palazzo is more than equipped to cater for your group. Sit inside the rural café or nab a picnic table in the stunning outdoor area. Here you’ll find an abundance of trees and water features with a playground for the kiddies—you can even bring your dog along! Oh, and there are beersies on tap. Need we say more?

Matakana Market Kitchen

Up north, Matakana Market Kitchen will cater for your group with a smile. Their market table can sit up to 20 people (!) and there’s also a river-side terrace featuring umbrella-covered tables. Everyone will be looked after, with a dedicated gluten-free menu and plenty of vegetarian-friendly dishes. Their shared menu stars baked camembert, pork belly fingers and local oysters.

Odettes Eatery

City Works Depot

Odettes Eatery are only to happy to cater for your squad. Their movable tables and seats allow for the the space to customised accordingly. Visit over lunch or dinner and work your way through their shared dishes. If there’s more than 10 of you, get amongst their set tasting menu. Reservations can be made for groups of six or more.

Orphans Kitchen

You and your crew will have no troubles fitting along one of Orphans Kitchens’ roomy wooden benches. The outdoor area is covered during the cooler months (complete with fire) but opens up to welcome the sun over summer. Their private dining room is available upon request.

Takapuna Beach Café

Takapuna Beach Café will provide you and your pals with good food and views. We’re particularly fond of sitting around their round outdoor tables. If you—God forbid—can’t get a table, you can always grab takeaway pastries, sammies and ice cream from The Store and sit on the beach.

St Heliers Bay Café & Bistro

St Heliers

Rock on up to St Heliers Bay Café & Bistro and they’ll do their absolute best to sit your crew—they’ll even move some tables together. Otherwise, plan your visit in advance and make a reservation. The take group bookings during off-peak times. We love their cushioned window seats with ocean views.

Laidback local Meadow are all for hosting your gang. We’re particularly fond of dining alfresco in their expansive courtyard—complete with cosy outdoor fire. We vote you order a few rounds of pizza (there’s six to choose from) and make an afternoon of it. P.S. They also do beer jugs.
