It’s been a tad (a lot) rotten outside of late, hasn’t it? Winter has settled its chilly self down in Auckland and it’s making us want to flee from our offices to take refuge in a snug-as-a-bug café.
If you’re wanting to do the same, we’ve found Auckland’s cosiest cafes stocked with everything you need to forget about the cold. Whether you’re after steaming hot drinks, blankies or simple cosy feels, here are eight cosy cafes to become acquainted with.
This family-run Mt Eden café will provide your daily caffeine hit with a decent dose of snug on the side. Using Flight Coffee beans in their Strada espresso machine and whipping up the likes of mushies on toast, Grandma’s pork banh mi and epic chicken rolls, RAD is a tad on the smaller side, but that’s exactly how we like our cafes. BYO laptop and power out some work while you soak up the warm, welcoming vibes.
Fact-Tree Cafe is hands down Sunnynook’s best kept secret. Not only do they have comfy couches to curl up on, their menu features soul-warming brunch fare—homemade hash brown eggs bene, epic omelettes and French toast with crispy bacon, grilled banana, maple syrup and cinnamon syrup. Oh-so cosy and oh-so delicious.
Nestled down Franklin Road in bustling Ponsonby is Fred’s, a dinky café with a knack for dishing out honest food, slurpingly good shakes and great coffee. The space is quirky and small with bright white walls, hanging pot plants and lights, and little tables for sipping espresso on. There’s also a big communal table to perch on and read a mag or two.
Peel To Pip
If you’re a sucker for both cosy cafes and sunlight, Peel To Pip is where you need to go. This cute Morningside café’s outside garden is drenched in light but decked out in comfy cushions and sheltered from the elements. Get stuck into a pinots bean bowl (chilli, wild rice, greens, house salsa and sour cream), spiced sunny eggs or a BLEAT. You can even bring the little ones—Peel To Pip’s play area and banana berry toastie are sure to keep them happy while you enjoy a cuppa.
Half the fun on this colder weather is getting all rugged up in winter gears. For those of you who like dining outside, Olaf’s in Mt Eden provides fleecy blankets to help you stay warm while you munch on their bakery offerings on an outdoor table. It’s ideal for when you have a pup in tow or simply prefer to breath in the fresh winter air. Whatever you do, be sure to get amongst their Cypriot eggs.
When an escape from the city madness is in order, Remedy Coffee will be ready and waiting. Sitting on Wellesley Street West, Remedy is full of books, board games and free wifi—three things that will see you set for an afternoon. On the food front there’s not one but two smashed avo dishes, tasty bagels and lovingly fashioned cabinet food. It’s a fave.
Sitting along Ponsonby Road, Orphans Kitchen is a homey café and restaurant to grab a bite to eat. With sheepskin rugs on the chairs and a rustic, seasonal food menu, it has a relaxed, unpretentious vibe and will serve you one of the best crumpet dishes in Auckland.
Geeks On Sainsbury
Last but certainly not least is the ever-popular Geeks On Sainsbury. Having built up a rep for their pretty eggs bene and brilliant coffee, Geeks On Sainsbury continues to deliver great food in a cosy environment. It’s styled with white tiles, wooden benches and a handy board telling us what’s what when it comes to espresso.
