New openings, new menus, new food and drink products, Auckland is filled with them all. This week was no exception with a crunchy launch for those who love peanut butter, a new release from Whittakers and two new openings.
Here’s our round-up of the best Auckland’s foodie news this week.
Prego Closes (Temporarily)
Those who have driven past Ponsonby’s beloved Prego recently may have baulked at the smashing up of the courtyard. Never fear, the Auckland institution is only closed for two weeks in order to remove its infamous tree and have a few touch ups and will reopen in two weeks.
Serious Gets Serious About Peanut Butter
Utter peanut butters rejoice because Serious popcorn has added a new flavour to their range. Introducing Serious Peanut Butter & Almond popcorn. Add it to your next supermarket shop, we promise you won’t regret it.
The Collective Pairs Up With Josh Emett
He may be the chef behind top Auckland’s top restaurant Ostro and fave Madam Woo but now Josh Emett has turned his hand at...yoghurt flavours. In a no bull collab with The Collective and Melanoma NZ, which he is an ambassador for, Emett has created a delightful new gourmet probiotic yoghurt. Combining real raspberries, rose petals and a dash of orange, it’s definitely a yogurt for the summer and will help raise awareness of the early detection of melanoma.
“I lost my dad to melanoma in 2011 and so this cause is close to my heart,” Emett says.
Puha & Pakeha Finds A Permanent Home
They've won the hearts (and bellies) of Aucklanders since 2014 and now Puha & Pakeha has found a new home in Grey Lynn. Dishing up delicious Maori-fusion cuisine, they are offering the same street food they've always been serving, as well as a few new items. Delightfully Kiwiana, there's something for everyone with the menu divided into small, large, sweet and side eats. Click here for more information.
Better Burger Now Open At The Airport
It’s no secret that Auckland Airport has really upped its foodie game in recent months (a dedicated Whittaker’s store was just the beginning) and now Better Burger has opened their doors. Enjoy that fresh taste of Kiwi ingredients at this popular joint next time you’re heading overseas at the international terminal.
Ben & Jerry's Non-Dairy Range Goes Nationwide
When Ben & Jerry's released their non-dairy range into the scoop shops earlier this year, people went a little crazy. But, as they were only available in five locations, it meant that one too many people were missing out on this goodness. And now, they have just announced that this non-dairy, vegan-friendly delight is now available throughout New Zealand in supermarktets and petrol stations. To celebrate World Vegan Day on November 1, Ben & Jerry's is challenging Kiwis to go dairy free...and with scoop upon scoop of ice cream, that doesn't seem a challenge at all.
Whittaker’s Releases Chocolate Assortments
Whittaker’s has seeped into our collective souls and, just in time for Christmas, they’ve released two delicious assortments. Perfect for gifts—or more realistically, hiding in your office drawer when that 3pm craving hits—we can confirm they’re as delicious as you’d expect. The first is the Whittaker's Artisan Squares, which showcases the finest NZ ingredients with Milk, White and Dark Chocolate options included. It's a classy, decadent assortment. The second is the Whittaker's Minimix which is made with famillies in mind, with all the Kiwi Mini Slab flavours they'll love. They're available from Pak n Save, New World and The Warehouse now.
No Ugly Launches Plum Flavour
A vege, a root and now a fruit—No Ugly is expanding their range of drinks and we couldn’t be happier. Each flavour contains Enzogenol, one of Mother Nature’s most powerful antioxidants, and now it’s available in heavy plum. Available from New World and Farro, it’s a wellness tonic your body will love.
Cloudy Bay Sail Away Is Back For 2018
It's one of the most popular annual pop-ups and this year, Cloudy Bay Sail Away returns, this time to Odettes Eatery. Situated in City Works Depot, the stunning venue will bring together the best of what Blenheim has to offer across design, food and wine. The courtyard will be transformed and a new Cloudy Bay bespoke menu available that heroes local ingredients. This time they've taken things up a notch with guests able to shuck their own oysters under the careful eye of Odettes Chef Jonah Huang. And, to compliment the new menu, there will also be two Cloudy Bay brunch cocktails. Running from November 1-17, with sessions from 3-6pm Thursday to Saturday, it's a must.
