It’s no surprise Ponsonby’s latest addition Clipper, is the talk of the town.
Taking over the space which once housed the legendary Mea Culpa bar, the new spot does its predecessor proud offering a hip relaxed space featuring aviation themes, pink tones, hints of greenery and neon hues. Brought to us by a legendary team of bartenders and mixologist including Barney Toy, James Miller, Jacob Briars and Richard Wood, the small but mighty spot offers an escape through curated cocktail creations and an expertly paired bar menu.
Split into three sections, the cocktail list has a little something for everyone, no matter what direction your night takes.
Winning second place at Bacardí Legacy Global Cocktail Competition, no visit to Clipper is complete without giving Barney’s Pan Am cocktail a try. Easily one of the best in town, Bacardí Carta Blanca, Aperol, Orgeat almond syrup, lemon juice, egg white and Angostura Bitters work together to create an unforgettable drink that perfectly walks the line between sweet and sour.
Big night ahead? The Long Haul offers a selection of light and refreshing lower-alcohol options. Our top pick is the stonefruit spritz. Featuring 42Below vodka, Cremé de Pêche and soda its utterly delicious with gorgeous flavourings.
If you like your cocktails a little more on the boozy side, look no further than the Short Haul offering. The pina colada old fashioned offers a refreshing twist on a classic. The heavenly blend of Bacardi Reserva Ocho, Carta Blanca rum, pineapple and coconut cordial, and tiki bitters result in a tropical vacation for your taste buds. But be warned, once you’ve given this gem a try no other old fashioned will compare.
Perfect for any hour, the Layover section displays Clipper's excellent flare for reinventing classic cocktails, the flat white martini, in particular, is not to be missed.
While you’re at it, pair your sipping with carefully crafted small plates. Boasting slow-cooked lamb shoulder to rave-worthy mac & two cheeses you’ll easily find yourself settled in snacking the night away.
Open now, do yourself a favour and visit Clipper on your next night out.
