Tucked away on the corner of Queen Street and Mayoral Drive you’ll find Queen's Head Bar & Eatery, a classy yet cosy affair serving only the finest of produce from around New Zealand. Dating back to 1868, the restaurant now occupies the same site of its namesake, the historic Queen's Head Tavern. It also features an outdoor deck perfectly positioned for all-day sun and epic city views, including the Sky Tower.
At the helm of the restaurant is Executive Chef Glen Rockhouse. A fourth-generation chef with more than 20 years in the game, he knows a thing or two about food—not to mention the multiple awards he has under his belt. He’s all about simple foods and locally sourced produce, executed with punchy flavour and perfect presentation.
Let’s start with the most important meal of the day. Breakfast is served à la carte from 6.30am–10.30am daily with all of your favourites on offer. If you’re health-conscious, opt for their homemade bircher muesli soaked in apple juice, natural yoghurt and topped with seasonal fruits and nuts. Those seeking a savoury indulgence shouldn’t go past the sweetcorn fritters with poached egg, kale, tomato and avocado—it’s perfection in a bite.
The show-stoppers come out at lunch, with plenty of Chef Glen’s signature dishes on offer. On a sunny day we’re all about relaxing on the deck, beer and burger in hand. The Queen's Head burger stars a 100% Angus beef patty topped with beetroot, onion jam, cheddar and streaky bacon, sandwiched between a Wild Wheat brioche bun sourced locally from the Mt Eden bakery. Pair this with a Kiwi craft beer from their ever-changing selection and consider lunch sorted.
They also serve up fine dining come lunch, like the Japanese-inspired Ora King Marlborough salmon featuring sansho pepper, soba noodles, tofu, shiitake, daikon, and dashi broth. We can already taste the umami. Alternatively, take a trip to Italy with the seafood risotto packed with local mussels, snapper, and prawns soaking in tomatoes.
Queen's Head Bar & Eatery is the perfect place for a cosy, intimate and delicious dinner. We’re drooling over the Bostock’s Organic Free-Range Chicken, which is marinated to perfection and served with a crispy skin, pancetta, potato, grilled courgette and mushroom ragu. You should also try the premium Te Mana lamb sourced from Canterbury, a seared rump served with golden baby beets, spinach, pomegranate and sumac labneh. Alternatively from the South are the premium handpicked 55-day aged grass fed beef and you have eye fillet, scotch fillet and sirloin cuts to choose from.
Top off the perfect dinner with a tipple from their extensive cocktail menu—there’s everything from a classic espresso martini through to the more adventurous Tokyo Tea with Midori, vodka, cherry and lemonade. Pair this with a delectable dessert like the deconstructed tiramisu with coffee and marsala mascarpone, chocolate sponge, coffee gel and vanilla crumble—we’re actually drooling.
