Summer is all about beaches, barbies, drinks with friends and—if you’re anything like us—outdoor movies. There’s nothing quite as special as sipping on a glass of vino, relaxing on a beanbag and watching a film with the stars twinkling above.
And, this summer, you’ll have allllll the chances to do just this as our epic outdoor cinema scene takes things to an even hotter level.
And so, we’ve rounded up all the outdoor cinema screenings happening in the next few months here in this fabulous city of ours. Enjoy!
The much-awaited Silo Park Cinema is coming back! Not only do you get to watch a film projected onto the silos, you also get to stuff your face with delicious food from the food stalls and trucks. The outdoor cinema showing started on December 2 and runs through until the end of January. We’ve got the full film line-up here, so start planning your not-to-be-missed session.
Movies In The Square
One of Auckland’s newest shopping centres, NorthWest at Westgate, is hosting movies in the square every Friday until the end of Feb (weather permitting). You’ll be able to catch a free film in the Maki Street town square on a giant screen. Features include Night At The Museum, Boy and Chasing Great. Find their full schedule here.
Ben & Jerry’s Openair Cinemas
Ben & Jerry’s Openair Cinemas returns to Auckland for the second time this summer. Film-goers can go early to enjoy tasty food and drinks from the bar while enjoying some live music (and countless serves of ice cream!). As the sun starts to set, you can sit back and relax as you watch a movie. It all kicks off on February 2 with a film already dubbed a must-see, Lion. They are also set to screen Passengers, Moana and New Zealand film, Pork Pie. Click here for Ben & Jerry’s Openair Cinema’s full line-up.
Movies In Parks
You can pick your precinct with Movies In Parks! These series of events are organised by the Auckland Council and has locations set up all around the City of Sails. Movies In Parks starts on January 15 and runs through until the end of March, with films showing from Friday through to Sunday. With an epic line up of 22 movies (we mentioned they’re free, right?) you’re sure to find something you’ll like. From Hunt for the Wilderpeople and The BFG to Grease and Ghostbusters, there is a film for everyone. Find more deets here.
Waiwera Hot Pools
What better way to watch a film than by relaxing in a hot pool? Waiwera Hot Pools, north of Auckland, is a perfect weekend paradise for those who need a break. Get some excitement on the hydro slides before heading to the large, covered pool and relaxing while you watch a movie. There are films showing three times a day, 11am, 2pm and 5pm—check out the film schedule here.
Movies At Smales Farm
The outdoor cinema screening at Smales Farm is back for February and we couldn’t be more excited. There are three screenings during the month of February. You’ll want to bring the sprogs as they are child-friendly—Zootopia, Jumanji and Star Wars: The Force Awakens. The film screenings kick off at 5pm but we recommend getting there early to enjoy some delicious food from vendors of Food Space, and sending the kids off to the film-themed activities. The first screening starts on February 11, with rain date scheduled for the February 12. Click here to find out more.
Rent Your Own
If you’d like to create your very own outdoor cinema screening, then why not rent your own? That’s right, you can hire your very own freestanding, inflatable movie screen from Openair Cinema. So, if none of the above options take your fancy (or you’re away most of the summer), then set up your own movie night and make your own fun.
