Five Cafes You Should Have Been To In South Auckland

There are plenty of things to see and do South Auckland. And—more importantly—there are plenty of delicious eats to work your way through. From famous BLTs and quirky-named smoothies to cheesy Reuben melts and hearty big breakfasts, you’re gonna be left with one belly happy. If you’re from South Auckland, stay put—we’ve got the list for you! Alternatively, if you live further afield, make the south your next brunch destination because there’s a whole lot of yummy here. To help you on your culinary adventure, we’ve round up five South Auckland cafes you need (need!) to check out.

Urban Soul

First and foremost, we’ve got the much-loved Urban Soul café. Step inside the bright and light Manukau café and you’ll be spoilt for choice. Breakfast is all about tostadas, brioche French toast and homemade crepes served with grilled banana, crème fraiche and a hearty side of bacon. If you visit over lunch, order their signature BLT (or CLT if you prefer chicken). The toasted sammies are held together with a mighty skewer and served with a side of fries. There’s also a dedicated kids’ menu as well as plenty of gluten-free options.

Mottletop Espresso Bar

If cute and cosy is what you like in a café, then Mottletop Espresso Bar is a must-visit! Located in Papakura, the neighbourhood café oozes homely vibes—think brick walls lined with art, shelves brimming with books and mismatched bone china plates. For brekkie you’ve got comforting cinnamon-spiced porridge topped with toasted almonds and fruits as well as French toast served with orange mascarpone. For lunch, choose between a delish range of rolls, croissants, sandwiches, soups and salads. Wash it down with a cuppa of Coffee Supreme and you’ll be away laughing.

The Corner Kitchen & Bar

Located on the corner of the Clevedon roundabout is the aptly named The Corner Kitchen & Bar. This village café has relaxed and friendly vibes with an awesome food menu to boot. Order breakfast all day, choosing from eggs bene, house-made beans or a hearty grilled brekkie with all the trimmings. Lunch is about chipotle chicken quesadillas, grilled haloumi wraps and Reuben melts oozing with Swiss cheese. Move into dinnertime with the mouth-watering menu that has plenty of vegetarian and vegan options. There’s ample outdoor seating and with a full drinks menu, it’s the perfect spot to pass the hours by.

The Artisan

In the heart of Wiri’s industrial area is The Artisan—an unexpected but welcome gem. This café is all sorts of quirky with bright striped tables, flower-adorned dishes and a smoothie named ‘this shit is bananas’. They have a full food menu starring all the classics (omelette, creamy mushrooms and mince on toast) and a cabinet filled with fresh and tasty goodies. Here you’ll find rolls, pies, salads, quiches, cakes and slices. We’re particularly fond of their pain au chocolat that’s packed (and smothered!) in chocolate. Everything’s reasonably priced and there’s plenty of parking available—winning!

Red Shed Palazzo

Nestled in a gorgeous garden setting you’ll find Red Shed Palazzo. This rural café really is the people’s café—there’s a kids’ menu, playground and you’ll be pleased to know they’re dog-friendly too! To say the all-day breakfast menu is extensive would be an understatement—there’s four types of omelettes alone. You’ll also find a Mexican breakfast, toasted muesli, pancakes and even an option for body builders. Additional dishes are offered for lunch. Wash it all down with an Allpress coffee or, if you require something stronger, there’s alcohol bevvies on offer.
