Eat, Watch, Listen, Read | Here’s What Hamilton Business Owners Are Getting Up To During Lockdown

Lockdown is in full swing and we're missing our favourite Hamilton haunts more than ever. Anyone else desperate for a burger and/or a cocktail? To help ease our heartbreak, we reached out to some of Hamilton's coolest business owners to find out what they've been up to in lockdown. Here's what they've been watching, listening to, reading and eating over the past three weeks… And their first port of call when we're safely on the other side!

Soak up the inspo and, while you're at it, hit follow on their Instagram for updates on how you can support them and be the first to know once they’re back in action.

What have you been binge-watching during lockdown?

I'm currently smashing through The Wire. Season 1 was just so good I got hooked.

What book is currently on your bedside?

I'm not the reader in our household—my wife is. But the crew from both Weasel and Mr. Pickles are playing a fair bit of the most recent Call of Duty game together on the PS4.

What music and/or podcasts are you tuning in to?

The RZA x DJ Premier battle last week was great. The delay for the first few tracks made it hard to watch but after that, it was great—reminiscing about hip hop legends and all that. Joe Rogan is nuts but that's what I enjoy about listening to his podcast interviews.

What delicious treats have you been cooking or eating?

I've probably cooked more in the last three weeks than I have in the last four years—good old hospo. Lots of curries, chicken wings, curried chicken wings etc. We had burgers for the first time last night that helped with some of those fast-food cravings. Bootleg, Behemoth and Epic Beer have definitely made things easier.

What fellow Hamilton business are you looking forward to visiting again?

So many good local spots. For me, it's all about supporting those locally owned and operated businesses. Wonder Horse is definitely at the top of the list… Victor's Place, The Chili House, Donburi Ya!, Sichuan Style, Craft & Sage on Hood, Gothenburg, Duck Island, Grey Street Kitchen, Rocket Coffee via SL28.

WHAT HAVE YOU BEEN BINGE-WATCHING DURING LOCKDOWN?

I just finished Workin' Moms on Netflix, which I loved. I'm also always watching Gilmore Girls over and over. It's like a constant companion.

What book is currently on your bedside?

The book currently on my bedside table is What I Know About Running Coffee Shops by Colin Harmon—I refer to it as my hospo bible. I just finished Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine by Gail Honeyman. It took a while to get into, but I really enjoyed it in the end.

What music and/or podcasts are you tuning in to?

I listen to the Sick Leave podcast religiously. It's pretty hospo-specific but I'm sure people who aren't in the industry would also enjoy it. I also love any podcasts with Lydia O'Donnell—my running hero. My current favourite playlist is one by Coffee Supreme on Spotify called Mugs Not Hugs Vol 1.

What delicious treats have you been cooking or eating?

I've been baking a lot of brown butter, dark choc and cardamom cookies. And trying to eat more vegetables than baked goods!

What fellow Hamilton business are you looking forward to visiting again?

I can't wait to go to Mr. Pickles for a drink, The Bearded Weasel for some fried cauliflower, and The Little Loft to get my brows done. I'm lucky I got my hair done a week before lockdown at Little Hair Co. Oh, and Grey Street Kitchen for a coconut flat white. We have a Moccamaster to make filter coffee but I miss milky coffee.

What have you been binge-watching during lockdown?

We've been watching a variety of new season releases: Ozark, Westworld, My Brilliant Friend, and Tiger King. A great movie we enjoyed was Parasite starring Song Kang-ho. With the kids we've watched Enter the Dragon, Spirited Away, Howl's Moving Castle, Ponyo and other great classics directed by Hayao Miyazaki.

What book is currently on your bedside?

One side of the bed has The Light After the War by Anita Abriel and Demi Moore's memoir Inside Out. The other side has The Deadman’s Pedal by Alan Warner.

What music and/or podcasts are you tuning in to?

We’ve been listening to London Real and Joe Rogan’s podcasts. As for music... Baxter Dury’s new album (The Night Chancers), Kate Tempest (The Book of Traps and Lessons), The Fall (This Nation’s Saving Grace), and Sleaford Mods.

What delicious treats have you been cooking or eating?

Sichuan-style lamb and cumin dumplings with dipping sauce (yes, we miss our fave Sichuan Style on Collingwood Street), sushi, cookies, cakes, and loads of meat dishes.

What fellow Hamilton business are you looking forward to visiting again?

Mr. Pickles! On a daily basis we talk about what cocktail we would first order, followed by what numerous dishes and sides. We imagine having a babysitter so we can spend the evening eating and drinking, catching up with the lovely staff and friends, enjoying the food and atmosphere—like we always do when we go to Pickles. Then, afterwards, we would head to Wonder Horse for a couple of Alex’s amazing cocktails. A perfect evening away and out of this bubble.

What have you been binge-watching during lockdown?

We have an 8-year-old and a 5-year-old, so they've been commandeering the viewing mostly. Late at night, we've snuck in a few things though. We loved the quirky series Russian Doll about a Jewish New Yorker repeatedly reliving the same day of her life. We also watched Dolemite Is My Name based on the true story of filmmaker Rudy Ray Moore and his 1975 film Dolemite. We also finished the Netflix series Ugly Delicious with David Chang.

What book is currently on your bedside?

I have to admit I've only read one book since having children! Between them and running a business, I tend to flick through my favourite magazines mostly… Home, Homestyle, Flow, Habitus, Gourmet Traveller. I've picked up a novel I started over the summer holidays that I'm determined to finish—Sea of Poppies by Amitav Ghosh.

What music and/or podcasts are you tuning in to?

We've been playing all our vinyl. My husband Brent and I both love music. He's also been working on some playlists for the restaurant, so we’ve been listening to a lot of early calypso, ska and African highlife music. We’re also listening to our mate Cian on The Earshot—he's always got a good set. We usually listen to the recorded versions on Mix Cloud.

What delicious treats have you been cooking or eating?

I've been cooking a lot. I set myself a challenge to post one thing I've made every day of lockdown on Instagram. It’s a little ambitious, but I’m loving having the creative freedom and no time restraints. I try to make meals interactive as the kids like to put their own spin on things—meals like fresh tacos, loaded-up platters, and curries with lots of condiments. I've also done a lot of baking. I'm coeliac so I love experimenting with ideas.

What fellow Hamilton business are you looking forward to visiting again?

There are lots! The kids are looking forward to heading out to Punnet and Duck Island for ice cream. I have a birthday coming up so will check out some of my favourite retail shops—Atamira in Raglan, True, Needle in the Hay... all locally run by talented Waikato wahine.
