Perhaps you care, perhaps you don’t, but following fashion trends are important in the making of a stylish guy. We’re not here to tell you to what you must wear and when buuuut sometimes it’s nice to get a bit of advice.

With winter well and truly upon us, there’s no better time to update your wardrobe than right now (nope, wearing your favourite board-shorts won’t cut it in the middle of June, unless you’re headed to Europe, in which case, we don’t want to hear about it).

We’ve worked out the easiest ways to update your wardrobe this winter.

#1 You Need A Great (And Versatile) Jacket

“Bomber jackets are everywhere and are definitely the buy of the season” Rob Moore (THE ICONIC’s Head of Menswear) tells us. Inject a little vintage appeal to your style by swapping your regular hoodie/coat/sports-coat for a bomber. Keep the look simple and pair it with a relaxed-fitting tee, tan chinos and your fave white sneakers. The perfect outfit to see you through from date night to drinks with the guys. According to Rob, bomber jacket = most stylish guy in the room.

For fancier soirees, investing in a well-tailored blazer is a must. Not only will be be your classic go-to for seasons to come, but it will instantly elevate your look in seconds. Can’t decide on what shade of blazer to opt for? You can’t go wrong with navy. It’s practically fail-proof, such as this one from Staple Superior.

#2 Knits Are Winter Wardrobe Staple

Trade in your summer tees for new-season jumpers and knits, they’re wardrobe staples and it’s always good to have a bunch of different styles at the ready for you to throw on. Rob tells us to look for three things when purchasing new-season knits—the material, the neck style and the colour.

When it comes to fabric, wool or cotton are great options. Wool knits are a traditional favourite when it comes to quality, looks and functionality. They’ll also keep you warm on the coldest of winter mornings, even before coffee. Cotton sweaters or jumpers are great for layering and not as warm as wool.

When it comes to necklines, if you want to make your shoulders appear broader or accentuate a square jaw-line go for a crew or round-neck sweater like this one from Armor-lux. If you want to draw attention to your chest, make yourself appear a little taller, thinner or elongate your face, opt for a V-neck (just make sure the V-neck isn’t too deep, unless you want to channel like a cast member on Jersey/Geordie or any other reality TV-show set on a shore).

#3 Embrace Colour

When it comes to winter’s hottest hues, “grey, green or blue and white stripe” will go with everything in your wardrobe, says Rob. If you always find yourself wearing black or navy, try burgundy, olive green, khaki or tan. A good place to start is a tee in khaki or burgundy, paired with your go-to jeans. Colour will help you stand out from the crowd! We love tees from The Academy Brand at the moment.

#4 Comfort Always = Style

Never sacrifice comfort for style! If you’re not comfortable in skinny jeans, don’t wear them. Also never underestimate the power of a great sneaker. Rob tells us that a classic white sneaker is set to become your best pal this season. A fresh pair of white Converse completes any casual-cool look.

#5 And Finally, Don’t Be Afraid To Accessorise

Tie your look together with accessories. Opt for one or a couple of accessories that will become something you can “own” this season, from a cool pair of sunnies, such as classic Ray-Ban wayfarers or clubmasters to knitted beanies for casual Sundays to a new watch from Daniel Wellington.
