If you’ve already binged Unbelievable and devoured The Pharmacist, we’ve got good news for you—Netflix is serving up a new true crime flick that will shock you to your core.

Lost Girls, which recently premiered at Sundance Film Festival, has been garnering serious attention as it shines a light on a huge case of police negligence.

Inspired by Robert Kolker’s best-selling nonfiction book of the same name Lost Girls tells the true story of Shannan Gilbert, who at 24 mysteriously disappeared one night while working in Long Island, New York. She made a desperate call to 911 at 4:50am where she could be heard saying someone was after her and trying to kill her... then the line went dead. She was last seen around the same time screaming for help, banging on a nearby resident’s door.

Despite all of this evidence police believe Shannan is just a runway, but her mother Mari (Academy Award nominee Amy Ryan) knows better, embarking on a dark journey that finds her face to face with hard truths about her daughter, herself, and police bias.

Determined to find her daughter at all costs, Mari retraces Shannan’s last known steps, driving her own investigation to a gated community near the desolate outer banks of Long Island. Her discoveries force the police and the media to uncover more than a dozen unsolved murders of sex workers. Did we mention this is based on a true story?

While we wish Lost Girls was available right now, you’ll have to wait until 13 March to find out what happens to Mari and her crusade.

Until then, here the best true crime podcasts to binge
