If you're looking for a rooftop bar with a twist, then look no further than Dr Rudi’s Rooftop Brewing Co. which overlooks the Viaduct Harbour!
The venue is owned and operated by three young and charismatic gents: Kristian Lloyd, Callum O’Brien and Andrew Roborgh. Together, they have successfully created a fun, laidback bar and eatery that we predict will become a local for many...regardless of how local they actually are.
The space is vast, with a terrace overlooking the glistening marina, a large central bar and plenty of shared tables dotted around. The kitchen is elevated and on show, giving punters a glimpse into head chef Richard Simms’ busy quarters.
But wait, there’s more! There’s an actual bowling alley too!
Quenching that thirst is no problem, with 14 tap beers—two of which are brewed up at Leigh Sawmill by the crew themselves. The wine and cocktail menu is just as impressive. Our pick? The Jumping Goat Espresso Martini, which is incredibly smooth.
We also suggest you visit Dr Rudis with an empty stomach. Their epic seafood platter is designed to share, and boasts a gorgeous selection of New Zealand’s finest catches. Think oysters, island-style cechive, prawns, salmon and the like. Half of it is fresh while the rest is battered and expertly deep-fried. And we’re also excited that the ‘80s favourite—the prawn cocktail—makes a huge comeback here. It features a bed of dried ice for a dramatic theatre effect, while the cocktail itself is creamy and well balanced. If you like pizza (of course you like pizza) choose between their two-foot or three-foot creations. Wash it down with a jalapeno popper but be warned these tasty morsels are not for the faint hearted—a whole jalapeno is stuffed with gooey camembert, deep fried and served alongside a fiery, Bloody Mary shot.
The ribs are another standout and, if they’re your kryptonite, the ‘ribs four ways’ may very well be your downfall.
Starting next week Dr Rudis will also have your breakfast woes sorted. They’ll be extracting perfect Atomic coffee along with all types of on-the-go treats appropriate to get you through the day.
Overall, Dr Rudis is certainly a welcome addition to the downtown/Viaduct area. We’re preempting a lot of lazy afternoon tipples that evolve into serious eats followed by unintentional/welcomed rowdy nights. And we can’t wait!
