Every neighbour needs a local, and being an ex-resident of Herne Bay I can attest that Jervois Road was always lacking in that department, not that the bottle store owner seemed to mind… Benjamin McManus, owner and operator, saw the obvious gap, and with his seasoned knowledge and notable hospitality experience, he’s taken the leap and opened Jervois Road Wine Bar & Kitchen—his first endeavour.
The wine list is impressive and thanks to a nifty contraption called a Coravin, rare or more expensive wines can be extracted per glass without having to commit to the whole bottle— genius! The vino served here is mostly organic or biodynamic, too.
There’s also a good selection of craft beers and cocktails. Interestingly, all the cocktails are tea based—McManus crafting the dried assortments inhouse. The rosemary, green tea and lime gin fizz is earthy and refreshing while the chilli, chocolate, souchong tea with PX martini is sure to perk you up.
Nibbles are well thought out, generous and beautifully presented. Fish of the day is cured into ceviche garnished with orange fried capers and olives. The chicken liver parfait is silky accompanied with artisan crackers a glossy fig chutney and house pickled vegetables. But if you’re looking for something a tad special, I would suggest digging into the meat platter. All meats are cured in-house using the best cuts and served with lashings of mustard and pickles.
Pull up a pew and enjoy an afternoon tipple, swan in for a before dinner cocktail or wile the night away with an exoctic drop—there’s certainly something to please everyone at this newly minted local.
