For those who have been through something as traumatising as the tale I’m about to tell, I well and truly feel for you. And for those that haven’t, I hope for nothing more, that you never do… After many years of happily calling into my beloved local Malaysian takeaway, multiple times a week (yes it was that good), I showed up one evening to the shock and subsequent horrid realisation, that yes, Parnell’s darling, Kopio, had shut its doors.
This is no exaggeration—every time I’d drive past I’d longingly look out the window, with equal parts of my being filled with animosity for the betrayal of leaving me, and the other half with vivid memories of all the happy times. Sounds like a classic breakup, if anything. So, what if your ex was to suddenly, and without warning, pop back up? What would you do? I know what I’d do 99.99% of the time, but in this instance (the 0.01%), I would hold open my arms and let them straight back into my life. Welcome back, Kopio.
Yes, the dishes at Kopio offer what other Malaysian restaurants offer, but trust us—their curries are more fragrant, their meat more tender (and generous), their roti fluffier and lighter. The seafood laska is beautifully warming, the thick, creamy soup lending the perfect bath for the bounty of juicy prawns, market white fish and calamari. The green curry is like no other—just the right amount of heat balanced with coconut cream and zingy lime. And the beef rendang (my mother’s Kopio favourite) simply melts in your mouth. Wash it all down with complimentary green tea, or a thirst-quenching beer and/or a glass of vino (once their impending liquor license comes through) as you dine, or take it away for the perfect night in.
And while their food is insanely good, it’s the service at Kopio that will lure you back time and time again. Wife and husband duo Mei and Arthur Wong are warm and welcoming—you almost feel like you’ve walked into their own home. And if like me, you’re pondering why the sudden closed doors all those moons ago? It wasn’t due to not being popular, or financially viable. It was because the Wongs simply wanted to retire. So why are they back? It would seem a “boring” 42-day cruise made them realise that they weren’t quite ready to quit their passion, so here they are, many years later, in a new Parnell outpost, serving all their classic and much loved dishes.
Kopio is one of those restaurants that is simply born, and now reborn, out of passion. And for that very reason you know it’s worthy of a visit. Ah, Kopio—how we’ve missed you.
