The Filipino phenomenon, Nanam Republic has found its new home in Takapuna.
Long hailed as a favourite among the Royal Oak locals, lucky ‘burb Takapuna is in for a treat. Brought to us by owners Jess Granada and Andrew Soriano, the move has been a massive step for the duo. With beginnings in the night markets, the pair are absolutely wrapped with the overwhelmingly positive experience to Filipino cuisine and flavourings. Found on Hurstmere Road, you’ll find yourself in awe of the spacious, well-crafted fit out.
A step inside will have you face to face with the epic bar, fitted with handwoven Filipino crafts. A labour of love for the duo, both Jess and Andrew worked tirelessly on the fit out, paying to close attention to include nods to filipino culture. Out back you’ll find the lavish private dining area, an intimate space inspired by the cuisines Spanish roots.
“We want to make people as if they are at home,” says Jess. “We aren’t fine dining, we’re fun dining”.
Featuring a menu jam-packed with wondrous unique Filipino-inspired dishes, diners are encouraged to ask and enquire as they discover new flavoursome sensations.
If you’re in for a nibble, look no further than the crispy adobo. Balls of happiness containing lamb shank, adobo, with a Vietnamese herb dip. Or, opt for the Ukoy, massive tiger prawns coated in a ‘hive’ crumb served alongside a wicked pineapple vinegar, you’ll only find yourself wanting more.
For the starters, our top pick is the ensaladang talong. Encasings of brown rice cracker, packed with smoked eggplant, cherry tomatoes and foraged herbs it’s sure to have you quickly booking round two.
A masterpiece in itself, you don’t want to piss the kinilaw. Featuring Wakanui beef tartare, salted potato chips and a spiced chilli vinaigrette it’s almost too pretty to eat…almost.
Jess’ top pick, is the hearty roast chicken sinigang. A free-range half chicken, rubbed with a tamarind spice, served alongside watercress and tomato salsa, this bad boy tastes as good as it looks.
Don’t forget to save room for dessert. A game changer when it comes to desserts, you simply have to check out the Halo-Halo. Translating to ‘mix-mix’, this baby is a mountain of delicious featuring pandan panacotta, ube mousse, strawberry sorbet, on coconut granita. Pro Tip: dig right on in and enjoy all the components together, you won’t regret it!
