Cider is literally happiness in a bottle. Refreshing, thirst-quenching and delicious—what’s not to love?! In recent times, cider has been taking Auckland by storm (not that we’re complaining). Whether the sun is burning through the ozone or yet another weather bomb has decided to hit our fair city, cider is your answer. And so, if you’re like us and have a quiet obsession with this fermented drink, we’ve rounded up the best places to drink cider in Auckland. Go forth and sip your way to happiness.
Leigh Sawmill Café
Should you find yourself paddling around at Goat Island, pop into Leigh Sawmill Café for a post-snorkel bevvy. Alongside their extensive beer menu, you’ll find a selection of Zeffer ciders. Our advice? Go for their limited edition apple crumble cider, infused with cinnamon and vanilla. It’s freshly baked crumble in a bottle!
The Garden Shed
The Garden Shed is known and loved for its strong craft beer game with more than 30 ever-changing brews available. What’s more, they also know a thing or two about cider. While they change up their bevvies on the reg, you can expect to find refreshing creations from the likes of Hallertau, Zeffer and Hawke’s Bay Brewing Co.
Mission it out to Muriwai to check out the famous gannet colony (more than 1000 birds and their fluffy young nest here!) before visiting Riverhead’s Hallertau Brewery. Nab a seat in the biergarten (translation: beer garden) and check out their divine Granny Smith apple cider. It’s brewed the way a cider should be—not too sweet and full of flavour.
Brothers Beer Juke Joint BBQ
Brothers Juke Joint BBQ showcases the finer things in life: it’s a brewery, American barbecue joint and sweet as day drinking spot (with courtyard and all!). They have Zeffer crisp apple cider on tap, so you can rest assured knowing your bevvy is as fresh as can be. Their bottled range stars everything delish from Zeffer: crisp apple, red apple and juicy pear.
Ain’t no better way to spend summer than drinking cider al fresco. Sip on liquid happiness as you soak in summer vibes at La Zeppa’s rooftop bar. They’re all about the Mac’s cider here with offerings such as chilli lime, orange cardamom and cranberry ginger. Boasting comfy booths, city views and with colourful lanterns hanging overhead, this is a spot you could happily spend the entire day.
Wynyard Quarter’s much-loved freehouse bar 16 Tun is all about them craft beers. Cider-inclined folk are also catered for with creations from Zeffer and Peckham’s. Sip the afternoon away as you work your way through their mouth-watering food menu. Think paua fritters, sliders (pulled pork, grilled fish or corned beef) and smoked ribs.
If you love all things cider (and beer!), pick up a stool at The Lumsden. The freehouse bar is stocked with 15 beer taps (they rotate between local brews), a whopping 120 craft beers and—of course—cider. They have bubbly brews from Brotherhood Cidery (hello crushed pineapple), Good George, Magners and more.
