Here at Urban List we have two local loves: beaches and food. Lucky for us, the best of both can be found at Auckland’s waterfront suburb, Mission Bay.
Say sayonara to the out-of-town traffic and opt for a day trip just 15 minutes from the city centre. You’ll find new rooftop bars, decadent eateries, several ice creameries and plenty of beachside views. We’ve sorted your next Saturday (or any day really) at Mission Bay, The Promenade.
#1 Grab A Beer At Auckland’s Newest Rooftop Bar
Bringing their pints and bites to our shores, Auckland’s newest rooftop bar is owned and operated by none other than Hamilton brewing legends, Good George. Grab a cold one (we’re also partial to the frozen rosé cider) and head out to the deck for some killer views overlooking the bay. Don’t forget to order a pub classic like glazed wings, juicy burgers or the taco sharing platter which will surely hit the spot. Feeling peckish? Check out our full Good George Craft House verdict here.
#2 Catch A Flick At An Historical Cinema
Oozing Art Deco ambience, Berkeley Cinemas is one of the oldest theatres in Auckland. Bringing you the latest blockbusters and independent titles, visit this Mission Bay institution for a great wine list and old world charm. That's date night sorted.
#3 Arrive Hungry For Breakfast, Lunch Or Dinner
The seaside promenade boasts eateries that will have you sorted from morning to night. The award-winning Mission Bay Cafe is the local’s choice for some seriously delicious all-day options like potato and parmesan hash cake—cue drooling.
Heading out with the whole crew? Try Bodrum Kitchen for a sharing-platter of Turkish treats, hummus mandatory. While you’re at it, grab a pint and some fresh mussels from De Fontein, the infamous Belgian beer café on the corner of Patteson Ave.
#4 Travel Back In Time At This ‘50s Diner
If milkshakes, waffles, burgers and Southern fried chicken make your foodie heart beat fast, Bald Eagle Diner is your next stop. Complete with checkered floors, vinyl booths and a jukebox, you’ll think you walked on to the set of Grease. Sip on a milkshake (there's 11 flavours to choose from) and listen to the rock ‘n’ roll tunes late into the night.
#5 Cool Off With Ice Cream On The Beach
A beachside suburb is not complete without ice cream, and Mission Bay has plenty of scoops to choose from. Grab a froyo from KiwiYo, piled high with your favourite toppings. For some knockout flavours, head to Mõvenpick who offer deluxe customisable desserts. The newest addition to The Promenade, Gelato New Zealand, serves next-level gelati crafted daily on-site—we’ll take four scoops of Ferrero Rocher.
#6 Sweat It Up On The Reserve
Mission Bay has endless outdoor activities to get your sweat on. We recommend starting in downtown Auckland and chasing the coastline along Tamaki Drive. Take your pick from cycling, running, walking or for something a bit different, Lime scootering. When you arrive, check out the outdoor fitness park at Selwyn Reserve for a gym session under the sun.
#7 Have A Picnic By The Fountain
Selwyn Reserve borders the beach and The Promenade, making it the perfect picnic spot. Set up near the landmark fountain for a Friends opening credits moment—BYO couch and umbrellas. Rock up with your own smorgasbord or keep it low key with takeaways from Andrea Ristorante Italiano, who offer both authentic Italian pizza and classic fish and chips. Alternatively, grab a healthy noodle fix from Otto Woo.
#8 Level Up Your Beach Day With Water Sports
Head to Mission Bay Watersports (found in the beachside carpark) to book anything from a half-hour paddleboard hire to spending all day in a kayak. No experience needed, the team even offer introductory lessons and fitness classes for those wanting to nail stand-up-paddle-boarding. They also offer sunset kayak across the Waitemata Harbour to Rangitoto, where you can hike up and catch the surreal sundown view from the summit.
Ready to make your next beach day at Mission Bay? With everything you need to eat and drink the day away, Mission Bay, The Promenade has your next weekend by the sea sorted. What's more, parking is a breeze as each operator on The Promenade will deduct the cost from your bill—score.
