This Local Fave Is Auckland’s Best-Kept Foodie Secret

Everyone needs a local. The kinda place you can kick back, catch up with mates and knock back a couple of cold ones post the 9-to-5 grind. But, if you’re a serious foodie, selecting said local can be tricky business. A bowl of cold fries and greasy chicken wings doesn’t cut the mustard—and thankfully, you’ll find no such thing at The Cav

Situated on a sunny corner on Ponsonby’s College Hill, The Cav is known as the go-to place to watch the footy—the atmosphere pumps, the drinks flow and the crowd goes wild. And, with a giant deck and a view to match, it’s an unbeatable spot to wine and dine in the warmer months.

In the kitchen, however, some culinary magic has been going down. Staying true to what good pub grub is, head chef Eugene and his crew have found ways to upgrade and innovate left right and centre, resulting in some truly cracking dishes. We’re talkin’ chicken and waffles, pulled pork benedict, taco boards, burgers…the list goes on.

Sound tempting? We thought so. Here’s why The Cav is a must-visit if you’re a foodie.

#1 Their Bar Snacks Are Out Of Control

The Cav doesn’t mess around when it coming to sharing plates. After all, why eat one slider when you can eat twelve?! Especially when you’ve got BBQ pulled pork, crispy fish, and buffalo chicken and cheese to choose from. Monday night is Quiz Night, so round-up your squad and prepare to dominate over a taco board or two.

#2 East Meets West In The Most Delicious Way

If you’re looking for something to tickle your taste buds, you’re in luck. The Cav has injected Asian and Middle Eastern flavours into their menu through the likes of sticky pork buns, spicy duck rendang and a super-addictive Moroccan cauliflower soup. We’ll take ‘em all!

#3 You’ll Get A Complimentary Feed On Thursday Evenings!

Nope, we’re not kidding. Pop in on a Thursday evening and you’ll be treated to some free kai, courtesy of The Cav. They send out plates of food as you sip on New Zealand craft beers and wines to say thanks for calling The Cav your local.

#4 There’s All Your Pub-Grub Classics (But Not As You Know Them)

Let’s be honest, us Kiwis have a soft spot for pub grub. Fish’n’chips is pretty much the national meal and steak, eggs and chips are our idea of soul food. The Cav crank things up a notch by offering cray and chips—beer battered crayfish, Caesar salad, fries, house tartare and a little pipette of malt vinegar. Their version of a pie is a venison and mushroom hot pot with puff pastry and TRUFFLED creamy mash. Talk about fancy.

#5 There’s Burgers, Sammies And Tacos Galore

Sometimes all you want is a bloody good burger. Or sandwich. Or taco. Basically, carbs. The Cav has refined their burger game big time, offering pork katsu with slaw, crispy chicken and a classic beef burg. If you’re into your sammies, The Rueben is the way to go. This bad boy is packed with pastrami, corned beef, grilled cheese, pickles sauerkraut and special sauce—just like you’d find in NYC.

#6 Two Words: Fried Chicken

We love us some fried chicken and The Cav does, too! They’ve got the crispy coating down pat and if we could bottle that tangy buffalo sauce, we would. Choose between fried chicken on its own, with roasted corn mash, waffles or in a burger with bacon, cheese and blue cheese aioli. It’s clucking glorious.

#7 The Sprogs Will Be Well-Fed (And Entertained)

Got a tribe of little ones? Finding a local AND making sure it’s family-friendly can be a mission and a half. The ‘Feed The Shrimps’ menu features kid-tailored tucker served in bento boxes. From Worms and Dirt (spag bol), Ninja Chicken (teriyaki chicken) and Scooby Dog (a mini American hotdog), your offspring won’t leave hungry. Better yet, there’s iPads Minis and colouring books to keep them entertained.

#8 You Don’t Have To Pull The #cheatmeal Card

If you think that pub food = just grub, then think again. The Cav caters to those looking for something on the lighter side with their Healthy Eats menu. Dive into their legendary naked burrito of chipotle lime chicken, rice, black beans, yoghurt sour cream and veges, keep things fresh with their lettuce cups or warm up with spicy chicken pho.

#9 They Have Auckland’s Best Hangover Cure

We’re not joking. Feeling a bit dusty after a night out? Make a bee line for The Cav where your hangover cure waits in the form of soft serve. Yep, their vanilla and chocolate soft serves contains a WHOPPING 6 billion probiotics in one serving...and you can pull it yourself.
