When we heard Basque was closing, tears were shed. It was a staple in the rooftop bar scene and home to some of the best sangria in Wellington. It may be the end of an era, but luckily for us, they’ve renovated and reopened as Mockingbird; a vegetarian and vegan plant-based food eatery and bar that still serves up banging sangria, has an impressive craft beer and cider range, and will make your vegan heart (and stomach) very, very full.
With vegan food on the rise, it’s great to see a restaurant putting effort into serving up a huge amount of tasty and sustainable choices that can be enjoyed by not just those who eat a vegan diet, but everyone. Gone are the days of portobello mushroom burgers being the only vegan option anywhere. Mockingbird is spoiling us for choice and is giving everyone the goods they want. They’re nudging the ideal aside that plant-based and vegan diets are #healthvibes only and serving up some classic grub like big burgs, allll the bar snacks, and great loaded fries, plus some #healthvibes salad bowls too. They’re feeding all mouths regardless of dietary requirements and we love them for it.
When we say they’ve got all the vegan goods we mean it. Some of the burger fillings include chipotle jackfruit, seitan chicken and facon (that’s fake bacon if you’re not in the know). Our top pick? It’s the hungry planet ‘beef’ cheeseburger that’s so beefy it’s kinda frightening that it’s not actual beef. They’ve got tempeh meatballs, popcorn tofu, cauliflower wings, and four different kinds of fries. Yes, please.
Whether you eat a vegan diet always or are trying out a meatless Monday or sustainable Sunday, Mockingbird is here for you and it’s the kind of place you can take anyone; Date night? Friends dinner? After work wine? Dinner with mum? You’re sorted. Grab a sangria and sit in the newly renovated lower floor, or even better- wrapped up in a blanket on the rooftop ‘till the sun goes down. Trust us, it’s a good time.
