Folk are flocking to New Zealand’s first dedicated mac (of mac 'n' cheese fame) eatery in Petone, and for good reason. Wholy Mac has a menu featuring nine different types of macaroni dishes to suit every heart's desire. This new spot is bound to send even the most refined tastes back to their childhood, reminding us what really great comfort food is.

We're not just chatting your classic mac 'n' cheese at Wholy Mac either—we are talking a whole new level of mac. Each dish comes as a punnet of mac with a variety of toppings to dig in to. Choose from the Wholy Cow's slow cooked brisket or the Wholy Hock A Moly with manuka smoked bacon chunks and breadcrumbs, or even the Southern Mac with southern fried chicken and chipotle. These signature dishes have been flying out the door and we can’t get enough of the succulent bowls of creamy mac overloaded with delicious toppings.

Vegans are also welcomed to get in on the action—the Mac A Phoni with spicy kasundi, spinach and vegan cheese has already spread amongst the community with vegans travelling for miles because “it tastes like real mac and cheese!” There is also a vegetarian option for those wanting to keep it classic with the MacGarita and there are even options for gluten free mac fans too.

The vibe at Wholy Mac is just as perfectly laid back as the food—casual, fun and easy going. It’s a take away joint primarily with limited seating inside—the walls are vibrant yellow and the music is loud. Don’t expect to book, just pop in and grab your mac or pull up on one of the stools inside.

A punnet of Wholy Mac also makes for a great meal to take to Petone Beach—who wants fish and chips when you can have the Mac N Sea—mac topped with delicious smoked fish, crème fraiche and capers?

Macs can be paired with a local karma kola and downsized or upsized depending on your preference—kids will go wild for the Mac It Down and those with big appetites will love the Mac It Up. You can also add a side with a delicious crunchy slaw, the mac bites with rocket dip or some sweet potato wedges.

Wholy Mac is the perfect spot for a quick homemade meal, a date on the beach or something wholesome to take home to Netflix. People have even been driving out from Wellington to grab a mac for lunch. Lines have been out the door, so get in quick. After all, who doesn’t love mac?
