It’s time to say goodbye to May and a big hello to June as we reach the middle of the year (um, when did that happen?). Don’t let the cold Hamilton weather put a damper on your social life. Things are heating up in The Tron with an abundance of events worth getting your calendar out for. The famous Fieldays, a beer club and even a Game Of Thrones quiz night... here are all of the best things to do in Hamilton this June.
Home Kitchen Pop-Up Eatery At Yalla Yalla Cafe
Be taken on a culinary journey through the Middle East to South Central Asia with Home Kitchen’s Pop-Up Eatery. Held at Yalla Yalla Cafe, the pop-up showcases the diverse food Hamilton’s former refugee community has to offer. It’s a (delicious) chance to experience Hamilton’s beautiful diversity and learn about different cultures—no plane ticket required. Expect to dine on the likes of tabbouleh salad, lentil daal and even Afghan dumplings with spinach and spring onion. Profits from the pop-up go to Home Kitchen’s refugee-led initiatives including supporting work and training opportunities. The pop-up is open Fridays and Saturdays on the first and third weekend of June. Book your table here.
Women's Wellness Workshop
New month, new you. Kick-start June with a three-hour Women’s Wellness Workshop brought to you by HM Wellness & Personal Training. The workshop will focus on how technology and social media can negatively impact our self-worth. You’ll walk away feeling empowered and knowing that yes, you are good enough—and don’t let anyone tell you otherwise! The event’s guest speakers will teach you all about nutrition, women’s health and female empowerment. Better yet, you’ll get a goodie bag brimming with vouchers, treats and take-home journals. Spaces are limited so secure your spot asap.
Chrissy Cakes (aka the mastermind behind the insane dessert pies at Winner Winner) has joined forces with friends to host Breasty Breakfast. As one of the many Pink Ribbon Breakfasts held nationwide, the event aims to raise money for the Breast Cancer Foundation so they continue their incredible support and research. Your ticket to Breasty Breakfast includes a donation to the organisation as well as a gorgeous grazing brunch, selection of bevvies and your chance to score a spot prize. Head to the Facebook event page for deets and nab your ticket before spots fill up.
Sunday In Session At Dough Bros
Dough Bros is at it again. On the first Sunday of every month, the restaurant is filled with the sweet sounds of live jazz. This month’s Sunday In Session will see trumpet maestro Grant Mason and skilled pianist Greg Taylor grace the space for their third performance at the much-loved restaurant. Soak in the ambience and enjoy the tunes as you dig into Dough Bros famous wood-fired sourdough pizza. The monthly event is popular with pizza-goers so don’t leave it to chance and book your table in advance. Winter nights out don’t get much better than this.
Paint And Wine Night At The Roaming Giant
June 5 & June 19
Get your creative juices flowing at one of Hamilton’s Paint And Wine Nights this June. The concept is simple: take a brush in one hand, a drink in the other hand and paint your very own masterpiece. You don’t have to be a painting prodigy to attend—the lovely people from Paint Vine will run you through every step of the process in a fun and relaxed manner. Head along to The Roaming Giant on June 5 to paint a tui nestled in kowhai or swirl your way around your canvas to recreate Van Gogh’s Wheat Field on June 19.
Beer Club At Wonder Horse
Another monthly fave in Hamilton. Head to Wonder Horse on the first Wednesday of June (and every other month) for their ever-popular Beer Club. The monthly ritual gives you the chance to sample seven delicious craft beers alongside some nibbles from the Wonder Horse kitchen… all for $20. Beer enthusiasts, get excited—June’s beersie line-up will star some newly released brews. Come for the beer, stay for the bar’s sweet tunes and cool vibes.
4 Seasons River Run/Walk
Experience the beauty of the mighty Waikato River with 4 Seasons River Run/Walk. The event is known and loved for its affordable entry fee with 5km costing $5 and 10km just $10—score. The fun run/walk follows Hamilton’s picturesque river path with no roads for maximum serenity. The seasonal event is limited to a maximum of 100 participants (to avoid overcrowding the footpath), so get in early to secure your place.
Game Of Thrones Quiz Night At The Quadrant Bar
The series might now be a memory, but you can relive it one more time with an epic Game Of Thrones Quiz Night. Based on the TV series (not the books FYI), the night will be a fun-filled GOT fest with trivia to test even the most avid of fans. The three-hour event will see The Quadrant Bar will transforming for the occasion with a dedicated GOT-inspired food and drink menu. So, round up your fellow Thronees to form a team of four to six and see if you’ve got what it takes to sit on the Iron Throne. P.S. Dress-ups are absolutely encouraged.
June 12 to June 15
You can’t call yourself a Hamiltonian without having attended the Fieldays. Held across four days, the iconic agricultural event is the largest of its type in the South Hemisphere. It’s known and loved as a platform to launch cutting edge technology and groundbreaking innovation. And, whether you live in town or the country, the Fieldays has something for everyone with shopping, competitions and live shows. We’re talking a tractor-pulling competition, cooking demos from top Kiwi chefs, a No.8 wire art exhibition, and the highly anticipated Rural Catch where eight single farmers go head-to-head to compete for the Golden Gumboot.
HOYTS Girls’ Night — Dirty Dancing
Get ready for “the time of your life” at HOYTS Girls’ Night screening of Dirty Dancing. The ‘80s classic will—once again—be brought to life on the big screen for one night only at HOYTS Te Awa and Metro in the CBD. Grab tickets for you and your BFF and make a night of it as you watch Frances “Baby” fall madly in love with her dance camp instructor, Johnny. And no, we won’t judge if you sing along to the iconic playlist. Each ticket includes an exclusive goodie bag and a drink on arrival.
Dirty Dog Challenge
If your doggo loves nothing more than rolling around in the mud, let your pooch live out its wildest dreams at the Dirty Dog Challenge. Back by popular demand, the event will see you and your dog navigate your way through a mud-filled obstacle course. Depending on your dog’s fitness level (and yours!) there are two courses available on the day: 2.5km or 6km. There will be an area where you both can clean off afterwards and—better yet—all profits from the event go to helping animals in the community. Register here and prepare to get muddy on June 15.
Tamahere Country Market
The third Sunday of the month sees the return of the Tamahere Country Market. The market stars fresh produce, artisan goodies and unique crafts in a vibrant country atmosphere. Arrive hungry because you can expect everything from flavoursome cheeses and mussel fritters to moreish fudge and the market’s famous bacon and egg butties. Better yet, the event is dog-friendly so you can bring your fur child along.
Alt Wine Club At Dough Bros
Calling all wine enthusiasts. Dough Bros and Hamilton Beer and Wine Company will be joining forces for their monthly Alt Wine Club on June 20. The evening will feature fun, informal wine tastings exploring the range of lo-fi and natural wines. Whether you’re a complete beginner or seasoned wine-lover, the night promises to offer tastings suitable for every palate. Make a night of it and pair your vino with Dough Bros’ unmissable wood-fired pizza. Wine + pizza = best club ever.
