Where To Find The Best Tea And Scones In Auckland

We here at The Urban List can't get enough of the High Tea experiences in and around Auckland, but sometimes it's good to just simplify things, too. Cue tea and scones.

There’s nothing we love more than a perfectly fluffy, fresh-out-of-the-oven bundle of pastry goodness, smothered with jam and cream. Serve it with a comforting cuppa and you’ve got all the feels of a hot water bottle to brighten the dampest of days.

So, where can you get this delish combo? We’ve done the hard yards and rounded up the best spots to eat scones and sip on tea in Auckland.

Puhoi Cottage Tearooms

Did you know that Puhoi is home to one of the oldest tea rooms in New Zealand? More than 100 years old, it’s fair to say Puhoi Cottage Tearooms has stood the test of time. Pull up a seat in the gorgeous garden and sip on traditional Devonshire tea as you munch on a scone (or two). Gluten-free folk will be pleased to hear they also have scones made especially for you.

Teed Street Larder

Newmarket’s Teed Street Larder serves up scones from Scratch Bakers (another one of our fave Auckland cafes). Teed Street’s speciality is their highly sought-after lemon and blueberry scone. Buttery and crumbly, this delight is topped with crispy sugar-toasted almonds and served with a side of butter. As for the tea, they’ve got nine (!) Harney & Sons teas on offer.

Cornwall Park Café

Situated in the stunning Cornwall Park, you’ll find the aptly named Cornwall Park Café. Their cabinet is brimming with freshly baked treats such as muffins, croissants and both sweet and savoury scones. You could enjoy yours with a Harney & Sons tea, but we have a sneaky suspicion you’ll want to go for their signature deconstructed hot chocolate.

Little & Friday

Ponsonby, Newmarket, Belmont & Auckland City

When it comes to cabinet treats, Little & Friday kinda (read: totally) nail things. Doughnuts aside, they also have a hella strong scone game. Their mammoth cheese scone is flavoured with cayenne pepper, while their date and orange number is lightly dusted with icing sugar. Their tea is equally epic with flavours such as lemongrass and Kawakawa.

Florentine Tea Rooms

High tea doesn’t get much better than at Epsom’s Florentine Tea Rooms. Pop in for a sweet and/or savoury treat—washed down with a tea, of course—or opt for their stunning high tea. You’ll be served a three-tiered cake stand showcasing the likes of club sammies, rice paper rolls, slices and macarons. Freshly baked every morning, their scone delights come with all the trimmings: butter, jam and cream.

Hawthorn Dene Historic Country Café

Giving the Eastern suburbs a tea and scone fix is Hawthorn Dene Historic Country Café. This quaint historic house is known for its high tea and, in particular, its homemade scones. Visit with your SO and opt for the tea-for-two option. You’ll receive a freshly brewed pot of tea alongside two scones served with cream, butter and homemade jam. This secret garden-esque café will put you on the fast-track to grandchild of the year.

Queenies Lunchroom

Freemans Bay

A fave Urban List lunch spot, Queenies is all about the friendly, cosy vibes. There’s something magical about sitting in their ivy-covered canopy while you munch on a scone and wash it down with a tea. Their sweet and savoury scones are made just the way we like them—light, fluffy and perfectly toasted on the outside.

The Burbs Eatery

Farm Cove

The Burbs Eatery claim they serve up the best scones in town. Their doughy delights are packed with dates and appropriately served with a cube of butter. This friendly Farm Cove café is one the kids will enjoy too—their fluffy drinks are served with cute animals faces. What’s more, the café also welcomes dogs with open arms (or should we say paws?).
