The World Of Wearable Art Is Coming To Auckland This Year

As autumn approaches, Wellington is getting ready to hosts its biggest theatrical event of the year—World Of WearableArt (WOW). Bringing talent from all over the world into New Zealand, WOW is a fantasy trip like no other. Featuring hundreds of unique garments, the audiences are transported into an alternate reality, feasting their eyes on the most innovative of worldly designs.

Can’t come to WOW? This year, WOW will come to you! Celebrating it’s 30th birthday, WOW is pairing up with Mazda to put on a roadshow that’ll bring award-winning designs directly to you. A troop of Mazda CX-9s will make their way through the country. And, printed with a selection of striking images of award-winning garments from WOW’s last 29 years, these bad boys will be hard to miss!

The tour will feature three models wearing award-winning garments from New Zealand, United Kingdom and Australia. Homegrown, NZ’s Firebird is a fantasy piece inspired by the birds of paradise, made by stencilling and silk dying, stunning in its unfolding display of colour. UK’s Princess Niwareka, is a garment which pays homage to Maori culture, inspired by the art of Ta Moko and envisioned to embody Niwareka—the princess of Rarohenga (the underworld) herself. From Australia, we’ll be graced by The Stitch Witch—a mythical fashion creature created from recycled materials found on the floor of her creators’ sewing studio.

Aucklanders will be able to catch the trio outside the Sky Tower on Saturday, September 15th. Leave reality behind and immerse yourself in a fantasy world fuelled by imagination, creativity and excellence. Share in the experiences, memories and hilarious stories of involvement as the trip lays out WOW’s history for your viewing pleasures.

As the roadshow makes its way through Wellington, Auckland, Taupo, Nelson, Christchurch and Queenstown, the entire ordeal will be filmed, including features of designers and fans, to be made into an installation for the 2018 WOW HUB on Wellington’s Waterfront. Come along and you too can be a part of WOW’s history!
