Brisbane’s food scene is something that never slows down. It’s competitive, it’s innovative, and most of all, it’s bloody delicious. And if you’re trying to choose somewhere to eat and are struggling to narrow it down, there’s no one better to ask about than our incredibly talented local chefs.

There’s always a big focus on male chefs that are serving up dishes around Brisbane, but there are some female chefs absolutely killing it in our restaurants, cafes and bakeries right now. We know you pay attention when we ask chefs where they go for a good meal, so in honour of International Women’s Day, we decided to ask some of the city’s top female chefs where they eat when they’re not in their own kitchen.

Lindsay Krahenbring

Head Pastry Chef At Darvella

"Gerard’s Bistro is one of my favourite places in Brisbane to go out for dinner. I love the atmosphere, wine selection and their food. I always take a couple of friends so we can order almost everything from the menu. I always order one of every snack, and of course, all of the desserts.

More local to my home, I’m a regular at Hope & Anchor in Paddington. Their meals are delicious and it's always bustling with people, so it's a great vibe. I’m also always keen for a burger at Remy’s! The spiced chicken with extra pickles is my go to."

Alexandra Norman

Executive Pastry Chef, Emporium Hotel

Maeve Wine Bar in South Brisbane has a great vibe with a European laneway feel, and an awesome wine list with a large selection by the glass. The food menu never disappoints and it’s a great place to kick back and graze for a few hours. Ellie, Marius and their team are super knowledgeable and there are plenty of places to kick on in Fish Lane afterwards such as La Lune or Bar Brutus. You have to order the potato rosti with crème fraîche and chives and add the Yarra Valley salmon roe, or the truffle supplement when the season is here—you won’t be disappointed. I could live on these.

Birds Nest Yakitori is also a great casual place for cheap eats and a friendly vibe. Their food is always consistently good. I can’t go past the tomato butaburra skewers with the cabbage salad side."

Suwisa Phoonsang

Head Chef, Naga Thai

Walter’s Steakhouse does the best steak in town! I always order the beef tartare to start. For breakfast, go to Paddington Social and order the chorizo Scotch egg."

Cat Anders

Head Chef, Mosconi

When I have time I try to stay local, but always going and trying out different places, like Same Same, Ping Pong and Hellenika. For a late Sunday lunch, Beccofino has always been one of my all time favourites. Spritzers, pizza, pasta what more do you need?
