There’s a new kid on the block in Ponsonby, and it’s set to become a cult fave.
Found on the main road, Chu Thai is the latest and greatest newcomer serving Thai food with a twist. Putting her vast 15 years of experience to good use, owner Pam Tawornsawad is thrilled to have found the perfect spot to open up shop. And what a space it is! Featuring the main dining area, gallery and garden area during the warmer months, you’ll be greeted by the scents of fine Thai cuisine with just a step inside.
“Everything on the menu is house-made,” says Pam, “With the same authentic flavours you’ll find in Thailand, we’ve put a modern twist on popular dishes.”
Serving only the best for both lunch and dinner, a glance over the menu is enough to convince you this is the crème de la crème of Thai fare.
So just what makes Chu Thai so unique you ask? In addition to staple comfort classics such as red curry and cashew chicken curry, they’ll expand and broaden what you thought you knew about the cuisine with traditional favourites and new creations inspired by the streets of Thailand.
Good luck to those who attempt to resist giving the pork belly bao a try. A must for any foodie, these bad boys are sure you have you coming back for round two.
Bursting and bubbling with flavour, the volcano hot pot is jam-packed with fresh seafood, mushroom, tomato, chilli all resulting in a sensational soup that’ll be the food envy of all.
Our top pick is the hangover noodles. Past the point of drunken, just think oodles of goodness smothered in their fiery house-made signature curry paste with vegetables and your choice of either veggies, chicken or prawns. Packing a brilliant punch, we couldn’t stop at just one bite!
They even have an extensive vegan and vegetarian menu for your plant-based pals! With starters, salads and noodles to boot, is there anything Chu Thai can’t do? The grilled aromatic tofu skin is sure to impress, infused with fresh herb, chilli, and lemon dressing all encased in a smoked crushed rice bowl. This is one definitely for the ‘gram.
But wait, there’s more! We were lucky enough to be the very first ever to try Chu Thai’s take on the poké bowl, and we were not disappointed. A colourful bowl of rice, chicken, beetroot, carrot, lettuce leaves and green apples drizzled in either a mint or coconut sauce. We were hooked after just a taste, and can’t wait till this treasure hits the official menu line up.
Sure to amaze, pay the charming Chu Thai a visit today and discover Ponsonby’s latest addition for yourself!
