Perth’s Best Mexican Restaurants

Perth's Best Gluten Free Dishes

When it comes to cuisines, Mexican is most definitely a crowd pleaser. Which is no surprise really, given that it’s fast, fresh, and often involves margaritas. We know we can’t get enough of it, so we’ve been busy hunting down the best Mexican restaurants in Perth—from casual family favourites to cool kid hangouts.

The good news is, whether you’re into Tex-Mex (there’s a time and place) or the more traditional Mexican eats, Perth has a place for you.

So, what are you waiting for? It’s taco time! Here are Perth’s best Mexican restaurants.

La Cholita

Northbridge

If you love tequila then La Cholita is the place to be, with one of the biggest selections going around. A visit guarantees a good time and some seriously delicious food. The guac is next level here, so make sure you start with that before moving on to some of the larger plates, designed (as far as we can tell) to fend off a nasty tequila hangover. The beef cheek taco is definitely worth a try, as are the three cheese jalapeno quesadillas and mole negro chicken. Do yourself a favour and finish with the dolce de leche chimichanga—it tastes like pure happiness.

El Publico

Highgate

Finding El Publico is easy—just look for the neon donkey. This place is a mainstay on Beaufort Street for good reason, dishing out classic-yet-modern Mexican dishes since 2012. The vibe is laid back, and the cocktails are GOOD. But we all know we’re here for the food. To start, we like the street corn with queso fresco, mayo and guajillo, before moving on to the battered fish taco with pico de gallo and chipotle mayo. Grab a few mates and have yourselves a top-notch feed.

La Vida Urbana

Leederville

From the same awesome team that brought us El Publico, La Vida Urbana brought fresh Mexican eats to Leederville in 2017 and the locals couldn’t be happier. It’s same-same but different, in the best possible way. The venue itself is a lot lighter than its Highgate predecessor, with sunlight streaming in through huge bi-fold doors. On the weekend you can grab brunch and a mimosa from 7.30am, or head back in the evening to fill your belly with nachos, tacos, and all the usual Mexican suspects. If you’re super hungry, or just want to try a bit of everything, go for the feed me menu which is excellent value at $39 a head.

Caballitos

Perth

Caballitos isn’t a restaurant per se, it’s a bar that serves damn good Mexican food—so good that we couldn’t possibly leave them off a list of Perth’s best Mexican joints. Upon entry you’re bound to notice the stripper pole, which is a pretty good indication this is a place that knows how to party, and after a few of their signature tequila cocktails we’re betting a little pole dancing is almost inevitable. Kick your week off on Margarita Monday with free-flowing frozen margaritas all night long, then come right back again on Taco Tuesday for all the $5 tacos you can eat. The guacamole is also next level.

Piggy Food Co

North Fremantle

The perfect combo of North American and Mexican, you can expect everything from authentic tacos and quesadillas to hog fries and chicken wings at Piggy Food Co. The fried avo tacos are the bomb and you can't leave without getting an ice cream sambo!

El Grotto

Scarborough

There are few things in life that can beat tacos and tequila by the beach, and El Grotto knows it. They’ve nailed the cocktail selection, and the menu is full of all our favourites. Come down on a Thursday and grab yourself some $2 tacos, or cruise in on a Saturday for $5 tinnies and live DJs. We’re yet to try anything on the menu that we don’t rate, but the fried chicken tostada deserves an extra special mention (and is one of the main reasons we've included this Mexican bar on a list of Perth's best Mexican restaurants). Don’t ask, just order.

South Beach Tacos

South Fremantle

When it comes to Mexican restaurants in Perth, it doesn’t get much more laid back than South Beach Tacos. We love this place for its no frills approach, and service that always comes with a big smile. Come early for a brekky burrito and bottomless coffee, or late for jalapeno poppers and pulled pork tacos. Just be sure to BYO—they’re not licensed at this stage but get a big thumbs up for not charging corkage.

Two Gringos Mexican Grill

Victoria Park

If you’re after fresh and fast Mexican, head to Two Gringos in Vic Park. This causal BYO venue is cheerfully decorated and offers all the favourite dishes we know and love, including a particularly good burrito bowl, and a very tasty triple cheese quesadilla. And good news for our veggie friends—pretty much everything here can be made vegetarian or vegan. It might not be fancy, but you can certainly taste the love in this place.
