Old and new come out to play at William Topp in Perth. Kinky Swell is tucked away on Brighton Road in Scarborough, and from the outside looks fairly unassuming. But looks can be deceiving, team, because as soon as you cast your eyes over this menu, you’ll know you’re in for a ride. And when you start seeing other people’s breakfast come out of the kitchen, you might just intercept the waiter on his way to their table so you can demolish it yourself.

The owners of this North Perth boutique set out to establish a shop where you can walk in and feel at home, and be encouraged to express your individuality through a love of prints, fabrics and styles. They offer an eclectic mix of up-and-coming and well-known Australian designers and overseas favourites, including Manning Cartel, Alice McCall, Winter Kate and House of Harlow.

Husband and wife team Jane King (designer) and Adam Coffey (mechanical engineer) are the masterminds behind home and giftware store Future Shelter. The combined workshop and retail space on Angove Street is home to a small team of designers and makers, showcasing locally inspired and locally made items. The workshop has equipment for screen printing, industrial sewing, laser cutting, woodwork, and ceramic making, resulting in zesty and meticulously crafted offerings such as lampshades, coasters, wall decals, clothing, jewellery and stationery.

If you're looking for some quality handcrafted items to make your home feel that little bit more special this year, the stylish North Perth arts hub, Angove Street Collective, is just the place for you.

For a serious case of the meat sweats head to Perth Brazilian Restaurant, Lapa Brazilian Barbecue. Named after one of the most famous boroughs of Rio de Janeiro, this Subi joint offers up 16 different cuts of meat and an endless feast option which will see your stomach through until dinnertime...tomorrow. For those not up to the meaty challenge, there’s also an a la carte menu.

Housed in an old Victorian terrace, snuggle up to the fire in winter or lap up the sunshine in the courtyard over summer. With a focus on wine, the wine list, fittingly, is spot on but they also have plenty of interesting beers and ciders on offer. Get stuck into one of Mrs Brown's cheese platters or cure your hunger with a Flipside burger from next door. That's Sunday arvo sorted then.

Little Shop of Plenty is a welcome addition to the vegetarian and vegan scene in Maylands. Everything they churn out is gluten, dairy and cane sugar free, and there's a pantry on-site that's ripe for a little post-meal perusing (you'll definitely want to pick up some of Plenty's own granola). Now open two nights a week, with a bevvy licence to boot, visit Little Shop of Plenty next time you're looking for healthy eats that don't skimp on flavour. 

Where all the Freo hippies go to dine, Heaven Raw Cafe have got all your raw and vegan cravings covered. Plonked inside the FERN Community Garden, you can slide into a bench outside in the veggie garden and watch the chickens roam free while digging in to Heaven’s delish nosh. Serving breakfast, lunch and coffee, Heaven Raw Cafe is kid and dog friendly—bonus!

The home of live original music in Fremantle, North Fremantle bar Mojos is a Perth music institution and a favourite spot among Perth music junkies. Boasting shows from international acts to unknown locals and everything in between, the diverse crowd and wide variety of tunes always make for a fun night out. Test out your new material at open mic night on Mondays or go for the comedy, reggae or hip hop nights.

Founded by Cat and Dave Exham, who ate their way around the world before settling back in Perth, Fremantle cafe Little Lefroy's has found a perfect home on South Terrace. Serving up exceptional coffee and delicious brekky and lunch fare like apple crumble porridge, fisherman's pie and an epic mushroom and haloumi burger, Little Lefroy's may be little in name, but it has plenty of heart. One of our fave spots in Perth.

Limones is a cosy East Fremantle Italian restaurant with a big heart. Housed in an old corner shop building on George Street, the small dining room gives off a homely and rustic feel while the service is spot on. The menu focuses on fresh and local ingredients and everything—from the pasta to the gelato to the bread—is made on-site. Our top tip: go hungry and get the three-course set menu for $70. 

Clancy’s Fish Pub is a Fremantle institution. The perfect place to while away the afternoon soaking up the sun on the grass out back, Clancy’s serve up some of Perth’s best fish and chips. If you need a little something to spice up your life, the Fried Mice (stuffed, deep-fried jalapenos) are for you. Pooches are welcome at this relaxed establishment, and they’ve got plenty of play dough to keep the kiddos happy. You can’t get more Freo than that!

If you need a break from all the hashtags, text speak and midriff tops kids seem to be getting around in these days, head to Perth bar, Bar Lafayette where old world sophistication reigns supreme. Housed in the old Perth Technical School in the Brookfield Place precinct, Bar Lafayette offers up artisanal cocktails, a diverse wine list and boutique beers, alongside tasty bites like soft shell tacos, pulled pork sliders and duck bao. If you’re looking for a place to host your next birthday party, the crew here cater for events for up to 120 people and have a full function menu including bottled cocktails.

Perched on the edge of Claisebrook Cove in East Perth, Toast have got all your breakfast and lunch needs sorted. With some super delish toast combinations, this little Perth cafe have everything from sourdough and ciabatta to fig and walnut bread—you’ll be in carb heaven. Toast also make some killer breakfast bowls and bangin’ milkshakes and juices.

If you’ve ever wandered through the back alleys of Northbridge on your way to late night Chinese and wondered why there’s a line of people outside what looks to be an abandoned building, you’re most likely looking at Sneaky Tony’s. 

Great coffee and friendly service are always on the menu at the small but vibrant Perth cafe, Blink Coffee Bar. The team behind this Freo cafe is dedicated to making every cup as good as it can be—so you know there’ll be no burnt milk or bitter shots here. Any good coffee needs a good slice, banana bread or muffin to go with it, and those on offer at Blink are just what you’d expect.

Perth Cake specialists Chopin Patisserie & Cafe in Sorrento has more than 30 years’ experience in creating beautiful and award-winning cakes. They’re well known for birthday and wedding cakes, but also have an in store range of quality European style cakes and tortes available to enjoy with a cup of coffee. Their speciality Polish doughnuts (Paczki) – made with sweet dough and homemade plum jam – are a must try.

Iconic perth pub, The Ocean Beach Hotel (aka OBH) is much better known for its bars than its accommodation, with wide windows looking over the beach in the saloon bar, a bustling and boisterous public bar and a massive beer garden. At night and on Sunday evenings, the Cottesloe location is a popular haunt for uni students, and during the day it’s perfect for a leisurely beach-side lunch. They serve up a range of classic pub fair – think ribs and wings, chilli mussels, steak sandwiches and pizzas.

Perth pub The Flying Scotsman (affectionately known as 'The Scotto') is a Beaufort Street venue that’s much loved by Mount Lawley locals. It's laidback and welcoming, always bustling, and you know that you’re in for a good pub meal and a great time with friends as soon as you walk through the door. The Scotto always attracts a mixed bag of people – and they’ve got a good (and cheap) range of craft and tap beers, and plenty of classic pub fare. Head upstairs to Defectors Bar for a cocktail on the balcony, or enjoy a pre-show drink at one of the street-side tables before heading into the Velvet Lounge for a gig.

Perth pizza joint, Neighborhood Pizza is a hidden gem in Mount Hawthorn that we reckon dishes out some of the best crispy pizza in Perth. It’s a little hard to find but worth the effort – head to the carpark behind the IGA on the corner of Scarborough Beach Rod and Coogee Street, and look for them behind the big roller door. The open kitchen, industrial interior, long communal tables and cool music creates a great atmosphere, making dining in just as attractive as takeaway.

Fremantle Italian Restaurant, Nunzio's, is a breath of fresh air. Situated in a romantic heritage building, Nunzio's is a far cry from the hippy, green smoothie obsesed Fremantle. Serving up authentic Italian fare, including a great range of homemade pastas, Nunzio's is the perfect date night venue with a gorgeous ambience and friendly staff members. But don't fill up too much on pasta because Nunzio's offer a range of delectable desserts made by their pastry chef.

With more than 50 pizzas on the menu, it's no secret that Perth pizza joint, Theo & Co Pizzeria offer pizza lovers some of the best slices in town. You'll find all sorts of flavour combo's on the inventive and creative menu (like err...a lasagne pizza!) and also the largest variety of dessert pizzas in Perth. The tables get snatched up quickly so make sure you get in early.

Cutting edge fashion haven Varga Girl is one of Perth’s best boutiques, offering Australian and international clothing, accessory and giftware labels. The bright and airy space is dedicated to decadent style and features eye-catching window displays (they even won the WA Fashion Awards ‘Best Dressed Boutique’ in 2014). Splash out on high quality, beautifully designed pieces from Australian designers Camilla and Marc, Lisa Brown, Empire Rose and Wild Horses, or a wonderful selection of international labels including Stella Forest, NYNE, Ricochet, Sita Murt, M Missoni and Mes Demoiselles. Added bonus: a lovely collection of vintage jewellery!

For all your old time America feels, and enough hard liquor to please Ron Swanson, head to Miss Kitty's at the Inglewood end of Beaufort Street. Our pick of the menu would have to be the hot wing pancakes with a side of mac 'n' cheese, but don't forget to save room for the chocolate crackle with honeycomb ice cream and salted pretzels. After you're fed and watered you can lay back on an old bed and pat your stomach with pleasure.

While the exterior looks a little old school, we urge you not to judge this Japanese restaurant by it’s cover. Inside Hanami in Mount Lawley, the chefs are serving up some of the best sashimi and noodles in Perth. The staff are friendly and the service is quick, making this spot ideal for lunch or dinner on the run.

If you’re even a little bit obsessed with shoes or handbags, Hunter Store could be your sorta place! Stocking what is arguably Leederville's most beautiful women’s shoes, bags and jewellery, this effortlessly chic store is home to local and international labels including Mollini, Ivy Lee, Beau Coops, Celine, Sempre Di, Sol Sana and Status Anxiety. Alongside the gorgeous collection of on-trend shoes, you’ll find statement handbags and purses, sunglasses, watches and jewellery.

Since 2011, George Street in East Fremantle has been home to beautiful boutique store Willow and the Bowerbird. The gorgeous high-ceiling building is filled with natural light and fresh flowers, setting the scene for a collection of locally made and internationally sourced, down-to-earth products including women’s and kid’s clothing and accessories, beautiful items for the garden and home, and handmade skincare products.

Atlas Divine is exactly what you’d expect from a clothing store in Leederville’s trendy Oxford Street, housing a funky and eclectic mix of womens, mens and kids clothing, accessories and gadgets designed to make a statement. For more than 25 years, Leederville's Black Plastic has been the go-to shop for a wide variety of quirky gifts and greeting cards. With heavy pop culture references and an ever-changing range of cult items, cool yet functional homewares, uber cool knick knacks and kitsch novelty items, Black Plastic is a treasure trove of delight for young and old alike. Pop by whenever you’re in the hood because they’re sure to have new wonderful and wacky items just waiting to be discovered.

If you’re planning a cocktail date or have an upcoming wedding, make sure you visit Harry & Gretel for beautiful and stylish clothing and accessories perfect for your fanciest of occasions. The gorgeously outfitted store features old wooden cabinets displaying jewellery, shoes and scarves, alongside racks of gorgeous dresses, skirts, and tops, with funky jewellery, bags and shoes to round it out. Good luck ever walking out of Urban Records/Urban Depot without a cheeky purchase. The Oxford Street staple combines a good collection of LPs, CDs, turntables and music accessories out the front with clever gifts, homewares, clothing and accessories in the back. Think cool men’s watches and wallets, boutique Australian designer clothing, retro-inspired kitchenware, lust-worthy jewellery and kitsch gifts – this treasure trove of a shop has a great atmosphere, is always well-stocked and is open until 10pm every day.

Previously known as Mr Munchies, Mr. Oro offers a modern take on a Japanese staple with their burrito-sized sushi rolls. This funky little place is tucked to the rear of an arcade and offers the option for adventurous types to concoct their own sushi roll, selecting all kinds of weird and wonderful fillings from the menu on the wall. Or, if you’ve got a big appetite and you’re chasing more than just sushi, their teriyaki chicken and katsu donburi bowls are where it’s at.

With arguably one of the best music collections in Perth, 78 Records has to be the coolest record store in our sunny town. They’ve got vinyl for days, as well as enough CDs, DVDs, accessories, band tees, posters and magazines to make your heart smile. If you’re in need of a new record player, 78 Records have you covered.

Get a side of culture with your coffee at Millpoint Caffe Bookshop in South Perth. Once you’ve browsed the shelves for your next rave read (be sure to ask the Millpoint crew for suggestions), sit down and enjoy a delicious breakfast, lunch or treat. They’ve got Spanish baked eggs, a mean Tex-Mex wrap and schezuan prawns, as well as plenty of Fiori coffee to go around. If you’re looking to enjoy some downtime with your cuddle buddy head to Luxe Spa on Kensington in East Perth. With some of the best couples treatments in town, variety is Luxe Spa on Kensington’s best friend. Lathlain bakery La Belle Sweets has opened a store after humble beginnings at the Kalamunda and Victoria Park farmer's markets and they're baking some pretty amazing bites! 

This underground bar and restaurant on St Georges Terrace was named for the old goldmine to the North West of Marble Bar, lovingly called “Lalla Rookh” - the name of a famous Kalgoorlie showgirl. Lalla Rookh Bar & Eating House Italian restaurant offers some tantalising Italian fare to the after work crowd. Go for their mouth watering eats (try the Chef’s Selection), a drink at the bar or a visit to their cozy sit down wine shop.

West siders rejoiced when this world-famous Italian restaurant chain found its way to Perth. Jamie's Italian is serving up simple and delicious Italian food like mama used to make is what they do best.

Etro Bar & Bistro is a constant in a sea of bars and restaurants on the ever evolving King Street. This popular Perth cafe, bar and restaurant presides over the cobble stone fashion street, devotedly watering and feeding the locals. It’s the place for fashionistas to air kiss and people watch over a long mac or champers.

With its op shop furniture crowded into a grungy basement, Choo Choo’s stands ironically amongst its preppy peers in Brookfield Place. This Perth dive bar offers good times in an unpretentious atmosphere. Rip that clip on tie off and escape the corporate drudgery with a local and international beer selection, cocktails and live music.

One of the original small bars to make Wolf Lane one of THE places to be in the Perth CBD, Cheeky Sparrow is the small bar offering opened by former Fremantle Docker Peter Bell. This popular wine bar and cafe offers a split-level loft space and laneway patio to enjoy a coffee, lunch or tipple. Make sure to scoff down one of their homemade pizzas – especially on half price Wednesday.

Descend into the moody basement beneath The Heritage and you’ll uncover Bobeche, a century old, speak-easy vibe bar with killer bartenders and classic cocktails. Perfect for date night or knock-off drinks, Bobeche pairs a curated list of cocktails, wine, beer and small plates with a playful atmosphere. There’s a happy hour from 5pm to 6pm Monday to Saturday to sweeten the deal.

Spanish inspired food and cocktails entice the hordes of Perth patrons down Wolf Lane to Bar de Halcyon. This hip Perth bar has been artistically decorated to match its funky laneway surrounds; wood from the old Bunbury Jetty was upcycled into the upstairs bar and tables, and artwork by local street artist Hurben is on display. BamBam...Who? Dumplings, Barbeque, Noodles, Teahouse - says the sign that beckons patrons into Bambamboo’s artistically decorated dining hall at 140. Order Dim Sum or a set menu and beer at this Perth dumpling restaurant via the many iPads at your service and eyeball the open kitchen to make sure it is made with maximum deliciousness – or just wait for them to SMS your phone when your meal is ready. Woah – the future!

The basement rooms that make up Andaluz are invitingly decorated with worn leather Chesterfields and vintage touches. It’s just one area in which this sophisticated Spanish tapas bar excels. Andaluz has some of the best authentic tapas in Perth, an international wine selection and an extensive cocktail menu – solidifying it as one of the darlings of Perth’s small bar scene.

Firmly entrenched as one of the best beach-side locales in Perth, Italian canteen Il Lido is passionate about wine, coffee, pasta, cheese, desserts and everything in between. Make some new friends on one of the long communal tables and tuck into delicious housemade pasta—the orecchiette with sausage, broccoli and chilli is not to be missed.

Cosy, sexy and oozing Leederville cool, Kitsch is the perfect Perth restaurant for your next date night. Sit under the huge frangipani tree adorned with lanterns and chow down on flavoursome, Asian-style eats that are all designed to be shared (which is good cos you’ll want to try everything). Get into Kitsch Bar Asia on Tuesday for the $15 pad thai special and stay for the yummy cocktails (because, Tuesday!). 

The Perth cafe to be seen in at in Cottesloe (before lunch anyway), squeeze past the yummy mummies and get your mits on one of Cimbalino's superb coffees. With a cult following, this South-side favourite also offers a bangin' brekky and lunch menu.
