Fish and chips are a pair so deeply etched in our foodie history, their relationship rivals such infamous pairings and Vegemite and toast, or, dare we say it, bangers and mash. Obviously, there’s never an occasion that doesn’t suit fish and chips. Wedding? Break-up? Celebration? Fish and chips are always the answer.
So it only makes sense that we round up the definitive list of Brisbane’s best fish and chips.
The Kingfisher Seafood Café
At The Kingfisher you will find the perfect place to gather with friends and family and enjoy a delicious range of affordably priced (and delicious) food. Mastering all the standards of fish and chips, this café also boasts a burger menu that is bound to get you drooling. Did someone say falafel burger with halloumi?
Clayfield Seafood Market
Clayfield Seafood Market isn’t your average fish and chip shop. Oh no, these guys are a little bit fancy. With fresh seafood, on-site fish mongers, a bevvy of gluten free options and healthy eats (read: fish that isn’t coated in beer and deep fried), Clayfield Seafood Market is a winner in our eyes. As a testament to their love of local they use locally sourced fish and even use Brisbane’s own Newstead Brewing Amber Ale in their beer batter.
Portside Fresh N Wild Fish
You can rest assured this family run Hamilton business will take care of all your fish and chip cravings. The menu at Portside is huge with meals from breakfast to dinner. What could be better than sitting back with your mates and enjoying some grilled Australian prawns with a crisp beer in hand.? Not much. As a bonus, they even have a catering service, so let them take care of your next event, stress free!
This funky West End venue makes seafood look like art! You won’t be able to pass up on their delicious crumbed calamari, which goes great with a meal of battered flathead! Bask out in the sun and enjoy your tasty fish and chips thanks to Sea Fuel’s outdoor seating. Plus, there’s also plenty of vego options here.
Red Ocean Seafood & Country Fried Chicken
Red Ocean in Red Hill provides you with a tasty menu of seafood, but has also mastered fried chicken so you can drag along that one friend who hates seafood—there’s always one, isn’t there. You can’t go past their fisherman’s basket, which is filled with everything from calamari to yummy seafood bites. You just have to start off your feast with some mini Dim Sims!
Swampdog Fish & Chips
If you’re hunting for the tastiest, freshet fish in West End, Swampdog is the place to be. Known for sourcing locally sustainable seafood, this venue can cater for any diet, even vegan. We recommend trying their Hungry Tummy Buster meal, which is sure to leave you satisfied and jeans busting!
The Fishmonger’s Wife
This award winning fish and chip shop has a fierce following of fans, and no wonder! The Tahitian lime and coconut marinated king snapper is a must try—just thinking about those flavours is doing things to us! To secure their spot as the ultimate crowd pleaser, The Fishmonger’s Wife has a whole other menu devoted to gluten free options, because who wants to miss out on fresh cut chips and seafood?! Not us!
Reef Seafood & Sushi
Reef is a bit of a rarity in the Brisbane fish and chip scene, in that not only can you get your crumbed, deep fried, or grilled fish and chips here, but you can also partake in the raw variety. Part Japanese sashimi house, part fish and chippery, Reef is a step up from the greasy papered by-the-seaside variety chips shops—it’s also a bar, making it the ideal spot to slurp back some oysters and bubbles before you hit the hard stuff.
At The Fishery you will find all your classic fish favourites, sourced by their experienced chef from the best of Australian and New Zealand produce. You can even choose your fresh fish fillet from the window to be cooked and served right then and there! And if you walk away feeling cravings for more seafood, they have an amazing recipe list on their website so you can learn how to cook delicious barbequed tiger prawns with garlic sauce.
