Lovely residents of Auckland, if you haven’t travelled around the windy roads that make up Tamaki Drive recently, make sure you put in on your to do list ASAP. The last suburb you’ll find at the end of this scenic route is St Heliers, and it’s now home to Porch Bar & Eatery and let’s just say, we’re already smitten.
Situated in a prime position on the seafront, elevated and newly refurbished, this new opening is sleek and modern with its black and wooden interiors. The kitchen and bar share the same back wall and both are open-plan—perfect for watching the buzz all around you. The wrap-around porch is rich in sunlight and boasts epic views of the harbour, Rangitoto and beyond.
Open from the first meal of the day and right into the evening, Porch is serving up an array of palate-pleasing options that are all easy on the eye. For brunch try their coconut-crusted French toast, hash benedict (with options of pulled pork, crispy bacon or salmon) doused in chipotle hollandaise. Or, if you’re still shredding for summer (we are, cough cough) try the ‘Bowl-o-rama’ which features perfectly poached eggs, avocado, grilled haloumi, quinoa and hummus with welcome acidity thanks to the accompanying pickled vegetables.
Chow down at lunch with a poke bowl, pork tacos or a traditional Italian salad comprised of buffalo mozzarella, prosciutto, vine tomatoes, basil and olive oil. If you’re up for something more substantial, the fish ‘n chips or beef brisket, chilli cheese burger with smoked cheddar, jalapenos, chipotle mayo and fries will do the trick.
When the sun threatens to set we suggest visiting with a group. Porch does epic shared plates and cocktails to boot. Try their ‘ultimate sharing plate’ which features cured meats, cheese, olives, pickles, calamari, croquettes, slaw and breads. There’s plenty of options for oysters including the Bloody Mary kind. Cocktail and delectable fruits of the ocean in one? Yes please!
The sliders are market fish and trust us when we say they’re great. The tuna tataki is fresh and explores Asian influences with added soy, ginger, lime, tobiko and coriander, as do the chicken larb lettuce cups. Angus Reserve striplion is served with cafe de paris, pommes frites, jus and fragrant chimichurri.
We always recommend saving room for dessert, and Porch Bar & Eatery is no exception. Whether you’re indecisive, love every sweet creation ever invented, or just need to get over a breakup via self destruction—their stunner of a dessert platter is adorned with deconstructed Eton Mess, mousses, parfaits, house honeycomb and other goodies.
The Porch Bar & Eatery in St Heliers is certainly a triple treat—it boasts good looks, killer offerings and has a certain energy about it that leaves you craving more. What more can we say? It’s definitely worth a visit.
