There’s certainly something special about new opening, Seabreeze. It’s like the cafe you never knew you needed but once you’ve stepped foot inside, you’ll feel like it’s always been there—and furthermore, you’ll feel like it’s always been your local.
Owner Brodie McDonald has ‘always worked in cafes’ and is very well acquainted with the new space.
“I actually worked here when I was younger,” he muses. “I started off as a dishwasher and worked my way through almost every position until I became the manager.”
So when the old cafe went up for sale, there was no question that the very place he learnt his craft was going to be his.
It’s located in a prime corner position in Westmere overlooking the ocean. The space is painted a deep teal, with beech wood furnishings. Outdoors there’s plenty of tables dotted along the footpath and yes—there’s a calming sea breeze.
The menu offerings are familiar yet exciting with each dish playing on a classic and executed with modern finesse. Toast and spreads are thoughtful and homemade. Think grapefruit and orange marmalade, raspberry jam, or chocolate, peanut and salt spread. The salmon bagel features house tea smoked salmon and generous amounts of it, with horseradish creme fraiche, heirloom tomatoes, capers and spiny dill leaves.
The corn fritters are certainly not what you’d imagine. Brodie is nostalgic with this particular dish which made a huge appearance in cafes in the ‘90s—but who wants floury and soggy corn pancakes? His take are made with feta and dates—blobs of the batter fried to utter perfection. They’re piled high on a bed of lime and chili jam yoghurt. And they’re delicious.
The Green Eggs make us feel healthy just looking at them—spring greens sit pretty on a bed of butterbean puree alongside perfectly poached eggs and dukkah. Or, if you’ve got a hankering for a burger, Seabreeze has you covered. Their juicy patty is laced with bone marrow and comes with the all-important accompaniment of cheddar, mayo, lettuce and a bit of kick thanks to their housemade chili jam.
Coffee is Supreme and there’s plenty of fresh juice and smoothie options, too. And, since there’s something about dining on a summer’s day with a glass of vino in hand, they’ve got you covered in that department also.
One visit to Seabreeze and you’ll be hooked. This is one new opening where every single detail has been well thought out and their offerings are faultless. So, go on—get acquainted with your new favourite cafe. We have, and we can’t wait to go back!
