Where to Head For Taco Tuesday In Auckland

Tuesdays just wouldn’t be the same without tacos. While nobody actually needs an excuse to chow down on taco goodness, with the advent of the tasty alliteration Taco Tuesday, we can’t help but loosen our belt buckles and get eating.

We hardly need to convince anyone of the gloriousness that is a taco. They're pretty much the best food ever, right? Zesty, colourful and with flavour that packs a punch they're pretty much like a party.

Here are our picks of the best tacos in Auckland.

Ain't No Taco

You know you're onto some of the best tacos in Auckland when a restaurant calls themselves Ain't No Taco. From the peeps behind Burger Geek, you'll find this Symonds St venue where taco and tequila dreams come true. Bright and colourful, it also has an entire wall dedicated to hot sauce! Here you'll find tacos without borders—the creamy rich Mexican flan, the Korean-inspired bulgogi pork with daikon pickle and slaw and even Jamaican jerk tofu and mango salsa. Stretchy pants only!

The Mexican Café

We have to start our list where tacos were born in Auckland—The Mexican Café. While others have come and gone, this colourful café has been a mainstay, delivering delicious food to fans since 1983. Choose between their chicken, beef or vegetarian tacos or opt for their taco salad for a super-healthy alternative. Wash it all down with tequila and you’ll be cruising through your afternoon.

Mexican Specialties

Hearty, delicious and authentic are just a few words to explain this Ellerslie gem—Mexican Specialties. The fit-out is low key and humble but don't let that fool you as they serve some of the best Mexican cuisine in town. Famous for their cheesy enchilladas, you also can't go past their prawn soft tacos. The prawns are plump and juicy and wrapped in a warm soft taco, aboslute perfection!

Besos Latinos

So many tacos, so much goodness. Besos Latinos can be found at the back of Elliot St Stables and serves up truly authentic Latin American, Brazilian, Argentine and Mexican cuisine. Try the Mexican Flute Taco for a zesty chicken flavour, the slow cooked pork tacos or if your super hungry devour the Machete—a foot-long taco.

Ponsonby, Britomart, Takapuna, Ellerslie, Sylvia Park

The peeps at Mexico have nailed…well, Mexican food and we just can’t get enough. Their delicious range of soft shell tacos have us returning again and again, just to try them all. The blackened zucchini, kale, eggplant pico de gallo with smoked cheddar and pepitas is a must-have. We also love the achiote fish with tomatillo and avocado salsa, pineapple and spiced cacahuetes. Enjoy them with a margarita or two for the full Mexican experience.

Citizen Park

This retro, American-styled restaurant in the heart of Kinglsand also happens to serve up some damn fine tacos too with its ‘South Of The Border’ options. Sit in the funky outdoor space at Citizen Park and chomp on fish, angus or pork belly tacos. Vegetarians will love the roasted bell pepper, halloumi, chickpea and falafel hash option.

Marina Cantina

Half Moon Bay

Always using the freshest ingredients and not only delivering top quality  Marina Cantina doesn't let that come in the way of quantity! The portions here are BIG and we could never complain about that. They do classic tacos like beef, pork, chicken and prawn but what makes them special is their deep-fried avocado. Yup, deep-fried avo! If you haven't tried this, you must get on to it now as it's pure creamy goodness.

Miss Clawdy

Wynyard Quarter

Lawdy, Miss Clawdy, you make our taco hearts sing! This South and Central American-style restaurant serves up some of the best tacos around, and its location on the sunny Wynyard Quarter makes it a great spot for your Tuesday tradition. The pulled pork with green apple, pickled cabbage slaw and micro coriander taco is totally scrumptious.

The Food Truck Garage

City Works Depot

Love tacos but you’re shreddin’ for summer? Never fear, The Food Truck Garage has got you covered. Known for creating healthy versions of our fast food favourites, The Food Truck Garage has one of the best Taco Tuesday in town. Choose from chipotle prawn, BBQ pulled pork or vegan nut mince. Yum!

The Flying Burrito Brothers

Newmarket, Albany

Fly your way on over to The Flying Burrito Brothers and get your taco fix! Mexican street tacos are their specialty and let us tell you that we can confirm that they taste 10/10 delish. The taco patatas would have to be the crowd favourite, who doesn't like carbs on carbs? Chilli spiced potatoes on a soft tortilla, comfort food at its finest. Also, don't walk out of there without getting a bowl of guac, that'd be a crime!

The Lucky Taco

Food Truck

Yes, they’re already on our list of Auckland’s Best Food Trucks but the fact that they serve, well, tacos (and drool-licious ones at that) means we would be remiss not to mention them here too. Inspired by food trucks in the States during a trip in 2011, The Lucky Taco has been dishing out tacos to Aucklanders for a couple of years now. We love the tacos de pescado picante—spiced fish with pink pickle, spicy avocado cream, lime sauce, red cabbage and coriander. While they aren’t open on Tuesday, from December 15 you can make their tacos at home or in the office! Their Lucky Taco Kits will be available to buy from NOSH stores—so everyone can have 'A Taco Truck In Your Kitchen'!
