In the summertime when the weather is fine, we only have one thing on our minds... and that is to find Melbourne’s best bars to quench our thirst in this hot hot heat.

Thankfully we are spoiled for choice when it comes to summer sipping, as Melbourne is inundated with beer gardens, rooftop bars, and waterside venues to keep you feeling fresh. Whether you’re after a crisp cold beer or a creative cocktail, here are Melbourne’s summertime hotspots for a beverage or two.

Temple Brewing Company

East Brunswick

Temple Brewing Company is a chameleon-like brewery that boasts a range of indoor and outdoor spaces, plus they brew all their beers on-site in Melbourne, so you won’t get a fresher beer anywhere else. Featuring limited edition One Time beers and their regular range of ales, check out their beer garden - perfect for summer drinks.

Madame Brussels

At Madame Brussels, tennis whites, astro turf, and garden furniture are de riguer - need we say more? It's a golden spot for cocktail jugs in the sun with your pals. $35 is a Two Player, or $55 if you’re playing doubles: Game. Set. Match.

Aperol Spritz Summer Sessions

Various Locations

Love a good Aperol Spritz? Would you like it even more if it was $10? Well then, you’re in luck! The Half Moon Hotel in Brighton, Trunk in the city, and D.O.C. in Albert Park are all running specials on Aperol Spritz throughout summer - so what are you waiting for?

The Royal Croquet Club

Birrarung Marr

Here for a good time but not a long time, The Royal Croquet Club will be open at Birrarung Marr from the 10-20 December. There is a stellar free music line up with everyone from ALPINE to Touch Sensitive taking the stage, and food and drinks from the likes of Gazi, Tokyo Tina, and Pidapipo ice cream.

The Standard

The Standard's supreme beer garden is tucked away in the backstreets of Fitzroy and never fails to serve a great pub meal any time of the year. Tall pints of cider in the sun is the order of business here, so hop to it.

The Wesley Anne

The Wesley Anne's beer garden is leafy and glorious and demands your presence on a balmy afternoon. Monday nights are also 2 for 1 dinner deals if you’d like some dining with your drinks.

Dr Morse

Dr Morse will help you get your Sunday off to a good start with their incredible Bloody Marys. Stay and soak up the sun in the courtyard with an afternoon beer and dance along to DJs on Sunday afternoons.

The Emerson

South Yarra

Elegant and sophisticated, yet casual, this has got to be the south side’s favourite rooftop. For something refreshing, share a South Yarra Iced Tea cocktail with a mate, filled with T2 Emerson Blend, gin, elderflower, lemon, agave, and sparkling.

Bomba is one of the city’s smaller rooftops - but that is all the more reason to love it. There's nothing quite like sipping on a negroni (or their very own white negronis) and watching the sun go down over this great city.

Rooftop Bar

The original Rooftop Bar of Melbourne never ceases to draw a crowd in the warmer months. Sprawl out in one of their deck chairs and stick around for the summer Rooftop Cinema program.

Loop Roof

Loop Roof's cocktails are the order of the day here - and in the warmer months, we don’t need to be told twice. We dare you to order a Sex Pantha without giggling, and reward yourself with Ketel 1 Citroen Vodka, Pomme Verte, Lime, Pineapple, Raspberry, and Falernum.

Palmz, on the top level of the Carlton Club building, is a tropical style rooftop bar that will have you feeling those holiday vibes in no time. The Passionfruit Paloma will quench your thirst, with Tromba Bianco Tequila, fresh passionfruit, lime and sparkling grapefruit juice.

Section 8

Section 8's outdoor container bar keeps things nice and casual, located down a street-art surrounded laneway. They also throw a killer street party when the mood strikes them, so keep your eyes peeled for their upcoming events.

The Buddah Bar in the back of LadyBoy is where we like to head for astroturf-laden, umbrella-covered, jasmine-scented good times. Happy Hour is daily until 7pm, which includes deals on everything from Thai beers to Singapore Slings.

Pope Joan

Brunswick East

While Pope Joan is an excellent brunch spot, it's worthwhile returning in the later hours of the day to enjoy their courtyard and a drink or two. They’re great supporters of local beer, cider, and wine makers, and will turn you into one in the process.

Arbory Bar and Eatery

Waterside views and espresso martini’s on tap; what more do we need to say about Arbory Bar and Eatery? In case you do need further convincing, food is available from 7.30am until late, so grab a sharing plate and take it all in.

Ichi Ni Nana

There’s a new rooftop on Brunswick St that’s got everyone excited, and for a very good reason. Get stuck into the Japanese grazing menu and sip sake as the sun goes down.

Fitzroy North

The back courtyard at Monte’s is the perfect spot to start a Friday night, and if you’re feeling peckish that’s no problem, just order a pizza from next door and they’ll bring it right over.

Naked In The Sky

Naked in The SkyBrunswick St’s tallest rooftop, always beckons us the second the sun comes out. Grab an ice-cold fruity granita, and the crumbed eggplant with honey and blue cheese to nosh on, and you’ve got it made in the shade.

Captain Baxter

St Kilda

Oh, how we do like to be beside the seaside during the warmer months. Get into the spirit of your surrounds at Captain Baxter with a St Kilda Mule, consisting of Hippocampus vodka, ginger beer and house made pineapple, lemongrass, and vanilla shrub.

Ponyfish Island

So there may be plenty of bars lining the Yarra, but what about one in the middle of the river? That’s where Ponyfish Island comes in; take in the city with a Treehouse Apple Cider.

The Boatbuilders Yard

South Wharf

Get down to Melbourne’s famous Maritime precinct and momentarily escape the big city life. Sunday sessions here include different meat on a spit every week, cocktails on tap, and live music.

Marquis of Lorne

One of our favourite winter pubs (due to their killer roasts and a gazzilion fireplaces) is also a winner in summer with their rooftop. With half priced tinnies from 4pm-6pm Monday to Friday at Marquis of Lorne, you’d be silly not to.

The Shadow Electric

This bandroom, cinema, and bar has it all when it comes to summertime entertainment - including a killer outdoor cinema program filled with everything from new releases to cult classics. Abbotsford is where it’s at this summer.
