Life used to be tough for a vegan in Sydney (or anywhere, let’s be honest), but then a whole bunch of cafes and restaurants started defying the dairy. One day it was pizza, now everything from sushi to the fish and chip shop has gone vegan too. Fortunately, there’s plenty for our tastebuds to celebrate.
Here are the best vegan restaurants in Sydney where both vegans and their meat-loving counterparts can dig in together, no special orders required.
Badde Manors
Glebe
Possibly one of Sydney’s best known vegetarian cafés, Badde Manors always does a killer burger, and the vegan brownies are an excellent way to do decadence without butter (turns out that is possible).
Earth to Table
Bondi
This comfy little café in Bondi is as chilled out as a plant-based bliss ball (raw, of course, thanks to the prowess of raw chef Julie Mitsios). This is food at its most beautiful—every bowl or slice of goodness is a work of art.
About Life
Multiple Locations
The salad bar at About Life is anything but predictable, and it’s perfect for a little inspiration as well as a quick and healthy lunch to go. Finish off with some CO YO for all the smugness.
The Dandylion
Bondi
If you don’t know your seitan from your tempeh, let us introduce you to The Dandylion. Banish the question “but what do you eat?” from your mind, and expand your haute vegan horizons, my friend. Plus did we mention vegan cheese?
Funky Pies
Bondi
No need to question what’s in these pies! Especially since we’re distracted by the lol-some names. No Wurry Curry, eating vegan in Sydney just got as easy as the Spicy Thai Pie. Save room for the brownie too.
Gigi’s
Newtown
If you thought vegan pizza was some sort of travesty/result of bad karma, think again. We’re still loving this Newtown pizza restaurant, and it’s one of the few places we’re happy to take a little cheese break.
Bliss and Chips
Newtown
What’s next, vegan fish and chips? Why yes. Everything from your battered “fish” to the “calamari” rings to the deep fried chocolate bars are guaranteed to be just as terrible for you as the animal-containing variety.
Superfood Sushi
Newtown
We’re getting all aboard the vegan train at Superfood Sushi, especially when they manage to make pumpkin in sushi taste good—go for the Saigon Pickle and Magic Mushroom.
Lord of the Fries
CBD
Those darn Melbournites couldn’t have a monopoly on vegan junk food for long. Quite a few confused meat eaters don’t quite realise the burgers, fries and nuggets are all vegan. Interpret as you will as you chomp on the onion rings.
Venus
Surry Hills
This Surry Hills café sits almost directly opposite a cheese shop, and yet it’s usually cleaned out after lunch. The salads are always changing, always delicious, and incidentally all vegan and ridiculously good for you.
Otto Ristorante
Woolloomooloo
What do you do when you want to fine dine with a vegan? Take them to Otto Ristorante, where there’s a fully vegan menu ready and waiting, along with the gorgeous skyline and waterfront view.
Bodhi
CBD
This beautiful yum cha restaurant set amongst twinkling trees had us falling in love at first sight, and then also at first bite. Don’t go past the wok-tossed mushrooms with lemongrass coconut cream and a pastry nest.
Yulli’s
Surry Hills
Yulli’s Modern Asian fare has been a long-standing vegetarian favourite for good reason, and it doesn’t just include a vegan food menu, but vegan-friendly booze too.
