In case you’ve been living under a rock (or your doona) for the past month, we’ve teamed up with American Express to celebrate the fifth annual Shop Small. We hosted The Urban List’s first ever Urban Weekender presented by Shop Small, and partied the only way we know how—by eating, drinking and shopping, while supporting our local heroes.

If you’re feeling total FOMO, we get it; you missed out. But don’t worry, even though Shop Small month is coming to an end you can still support your local shop owners. Here’s our list of 7 local small businesses that are worth your hard-earned cash.

Pineapple Express

Ascot + Hamilton

Breakfast is always an arduous battle between getting something sweet (and feeling mega-guilty) or getting something ~lighter~ that means you can feel like a health god for the rest of the day. At Pineapple Express, though, this dilemma is totally void because literally everything on the menu is a bang-up healthy time. Order one of their iconic bowls, or be a little bit fancy and go for the dippy eggs and the hipster’s fix juice. TBH, you can’t really go wrong.

Corner Store Café

Toowong

Corner Store Café is a bit of a Brisbane institution. Yes, you may need to line up, and yes, it’s absolutely worth your hard-earned moola because, honestly you guys, the food here is ridiculous. Complete with an adorable herb garden to meander through, outdoor (yet covered!) seating, and fresh blooms for sale, this spot has every box ticked.  The chorizo chili scramble will wow your pants off, and the affogato Belgian waffles will be headed straight to your Insta story once you see how stunning they are.

Kettle & Tin

Paddington

There’s something to be said about eating breakfast in an adorable cottage and something even more to be said about starting your day with a dish called 'death by chocolate French toast', which is extra with a capital E if you ask us (or even if you don't). Kettle & Tin's bloody Mary list is really something to behold too, so you should 100% splash some cash on that while you’re there.

Morning After

West End

Two words: Ma muffin. Morning After does breakfast really, really well, including their iteration of a certain brand’s famous breakfast muffin that comes complete with a hash brown. If you’re yet to try it, chances are you’re not living life to the fullest. The breakfast carbonara is also breakfast fit for royalty, which you are (obvs).

The Jetty

South Bank

Your money deserves to be spent well, we say. So, gather your crew, throw on your stretchy pants, and head straight to The Jetty’s waterfront home. Treat yourself to the beef cheek pho, steak frites, and some of their crazy-good crisp calamari. Whatever you do though, don’t you dare skip the dessert menu.

Pourboy Espresso

South Bank

If you’re after a Croque Monsieur or Madame, then Pourboy is where you need to be headed. Melted Swiss cheese, shaved ham, dijonnaise, and a poached egg sitting on top. If you’re thinking what we’re thinking, yes—this is an absolutely sound investment.

Rouge Bistro

Newstead

If you’re worth your weight in Insta-likes, you’ve definitely been to Rogue Bistro. If not, get ready to meet your new fave brunch spot, featuring black forest, matcha cream and Persian floss waffles, and savoury waffle with popcorn chicken and a menu that is out to steal your heart.
