The Sunshine State is known for exactly that. So when the weather takes a turn for the drizzly on the Gold Coast/Kombumerri Country, you might be left at a loss. Fear not, beyond sun-soaked beach days and dining alfresco, there's still a wide range of things to do on the Gold Coast, indoors.

Statistically speaking, the Gold Coast sees around 300 days of sunshine annually. Though we're known to experience a late afternoon tropical storm that rolls into the evening. And February is the wettest of all months. And it might be a surprise to hear winter has the least amount of rainy days on the Gold Coast.

In 2026, the Gold Coast is packed with stellar indoor activities that sparkle just as brightly as the coastline itself, year round. From cosy cafes to adrenaline-pumping adventures, myself and the the Urban List team have rounded up the ultimate list of 20 rainy day activities to keep your day bright.

Home Of The Arts (HOTA) is the largest public gallery outside a capital city in Australia, so you can expect it to be absolutely incredible. The beauty is that you can visit time and time again, and always see something different.

Whether you’re hitting up the latest touring exhibition, taking the little ones to the Children’s Gallery or visiting the whopping four floors of acquired collections, there will always be something to amuse, delight, provoke and astonish. Just be sure to register your car's number plate to activate free parking.

While there are paid exhibitions and activities, the main gallery and children's gallery is entirely free.

Be One With A Rainforest

Various locations

Sure, you could hide away indoors, but with so much lush flora and fauna around, you could just get amongst it. Grab your raincoat, some gumboots, and BYO sense of adventure. My go-to tracks are ones with a thicker canopy for more filtered rainfall.

I'm a big fan of Cougal Cascades, which is a bitumen path up to an old watermill, that follows a flowing set of waterfalls and deep pools. It's a top spot to safely rock hop and spot eels in the waterways. Alternatively, Curtis Falls is another favourite, within thick rainforest on Mount Tamborine. Be warned, it can get muddy.

Go Line Dancing

Eagleby, Arundel, Helensvale, Pacific Pines, Advancetown, Surfers Paradise, Broadbeach, Miami, Burleigh Heads

If the rainy day sent you stir crazy and you're keen to head out after dark, one of the many Gold Coast line dancing classes are sure to scratch that itch. While these classes are mostly set inside breweries and pubs, you can technically swing in for free and get a workout at the same time.

Mondays are for Improvers at Beechmont Hotel, my vote's Pacific Pines Tavern Tuesday for intermediate line dancers, Wednesdays and Thursdays at Hound & Stag Brewery for beginners to advanced and head to Burleigh Brewing Co. on the last Friday of the month.

Line dancing lessons are free, with the potential of throwing a few bucks at a bowl of chips or sip.

Take A Visit To Jellurgal Centre

1711 Gold Coast Hwy, Burleigh Heads QLD 4220

This impactful Indigenous cultural centre in Burleigh Heads will open your eyes to the fascinating art and stories of the Gold Coast’s First Nations people and rich history of the area. You'll catch it snuggled next to the bridge that crosses Tallebudgera Creek.

Immerse yourself in First Nations culture with a guided walk around Jellurgal (the Burleigh Headland), sheltered by the canopy and an umbrella. Alternatively, you can browse the centre, filled with paintings in the Art Gallery and learn about Aboriginal artefacts.

While art gallery visits are free, tours are $59 for adults, $29 for children, and free for little ones 0 - 4.

Devour Cheap Eats Under $20

Various locations

If the rain conjures up an insatiable appetite for you (does it make sense? No. Can we claim it? Of course) this one's for you. For those of us pinching pennies, yet allergic to cooking sometimes, the selection of deals and eats for under $20 call for a tour of their own.

For example, you could grab a $5 fish and chips lunchtime special from Burleigh's Red Hot Cod, then $6 tacos on Tuesdays at Hail Mary from 5pm, then the kids eat free at Montezuma's. In between, you could read up on more deals from our guide or browse laneway boutiques until your heart's content.

There are frugal deals to snap up on the Coast no matter your drive with the wipers on full.

Bookface is popular for its range and café, Big B Book Exchange in Burleigh is where to go when you’re looking for a bargain, and Bookness is Mudgeeraba has the quaintest vibe I’ve seen in a while, complete with a gorgeous kid’s corner and yummy treats.

Did you know that cloudy days give the best light for photography? And if you're ready to take this rainy day by the horns, there's a beautiful dish at one of the many breakfast spots on the Gold Coast ready for its close up.

Think Elk Espresso with their tiramisu waffles topped with cold brew caramel, Bam Bam Bakehouse which is home to a whole cabinet of induldgent pastries including the Nutella Choux Bomb, and Side Piece Coffee that does the best loaded egg sando on thick slices of milk bun, just to name a few.

Hug a mug across the table from someone you wanna smooch, it's the ultimate way to start the day.

Nab Some Op Shop Bargains

Various locations

Gold Coast is home to a plentiful selection of op shops brimming with treasure for your wardrobe. You’re likely to find plenty of high-quality gear at stellar prices. Salvos at Mermaid Beach always has fresh stock and Molendinar's Superstore could take literal hours to scour through.

There's something extra whimsical about wandering down aisles with your other half, planning a wardrobe overhaul or home redecoration. And a rainy dat is the perfect time to do it. Burleigh and Nerang between them alone, have at least a dozen excellent spots, and there are plenty more across the coast.

Vinnie's loyalty program has genuinely upped the ante on secand-hand scores, with even more incentive to buy pre-loved.

Good coffee, beautifully crafted breakfasts and the humble weekend brunch shine no matter the weather. So if you're looking for a rainy day activity on the Gold Coast that features piping hot beverages and loaded plates of comfort eats, you're in the right spot.

My top picks for rainy days would have to be Bear Boy in Helensvale, with its covered outdoor seating and nearby parking. Or the new Paradox Cafe in Broadbeach, which is just a short skip across the pedestrian crossing with an umbrella from your carpark at Oasis Shopping Centre, which gives you 3 hours free parking.

If you're feeling less like coffee, but still want a hot one, the best hot chocolates are here.

Cheers On A Brewery Tour

Burleigh Heads, Currumbin Waters, Biggera Waters

Gold Coast is home to an impressive swag of award-winning craft breweries. These include some big names in the sipping world, like Balter, Burleigh Brewing, Black Hops and Precinct Brewing all calling the Gold Coast home.

For a date that hits differently, brewery tours are available at basically all of them. This gives you a front-row seat to how some of the most iconic Gold Coast drinks came to be (looking at you Balter Captain Sensible).

Brewery tours range from $30 to $75 across the Gold Coast.

Scour Record Store Shelves

Burleigh Heads, Southport, Coolangatta, Tweed Heads

Vinyl lovers may well take up the opportunity to bolster their collections with a lazy rainy day browse through the Gold Coast’s funky record sellers like Butter BeatsBadlands Vinyl and beloved Broady institution, Beatniks.

For me, the Record Market in Southport has always been a go-to for a rainy day date. Scour the racks with your love and perhaps you'll come across a new gem to soundtrack your arvo. Best followed by a bahn mi from Bahn Mi Southport.

There's good chance if you're not on a date, you may end your trip with a new number to dial.

Rainy Day Activities For Groups

Play Mini Golf At Holey Moley

Circle On Cavill, Surfers Paradise Blvd, Surfers Paradise QLD 4217

You can order an espresso martini with a side of golf. Now that's winning. Holey Moley is where cocktails and bar snacks collide with crazy putt putt golf and good times galore. Unlike many mini golf courses around, this is the perfect rainy day activity because the entire course is indoors.

Expect a hole themed like The Simpson's loungeroom, a Barbie Scream Mansion and freaky holes that'll have you questioning whether you really should put your hand in that hole. I've said too much. For an extended rainy day hang, the onsite bar and Americana menu makes for the perfect place to chat.

Nine holes here sets you back $22 per person, just bring extra cash for beers and burgs.

Brave The Rockface

Burleigh Heads, Robina, Currumbin Waters, Carrara, Coomera, Shailer Park

Rainy days are sometimes best spent binge-watching shows into oblivion. Then other times, it's giving 'let's scale a wall in record time' energy. Balance, you know. The rock climbing craze came onto the Gold Coast scene hot, and it's here to stay.

If you're daydreaming of wild rock climbing but want to get that same thrill in a controlled enviroment, here's a thrill-seeking catchup idea you might just develop a new addiction at. Alpine Indoor Climbing was the first bouldering gym on the Gold Coast and is home to an impressive array of climbs in a reasonably cosy space.

Climbs will set you back around $20-$25 for a full day here, a top friend hang option.

Indulge At The Gold Coast’s Best Restaurants

Various locations

There’s no denying the Gold Coast is a culinary paradise. There's the perfect mix of established eateries and new additions to the dining scene. The hardest part about eating out on the Gold Coast is choosing where to go. Here’s 25 of the Gold Coast’s best restaurants, perfect for dinner out on rainy days.

I'm always a fan of Lenny's in Mudgeeraba with friends since the menu is dietary requirement considerate and genuinely delish no matter the restriction. The garlic cream and caramelised onion potato is my current obsession. If it's an after dinner nightcap you're after, the neighbouring whisky lounge gives a new vibe. Every second Sunday you'll find open mic kicking off from 4pm for something different.

There's something extra special about ducking out of the wet into a toasty eatery, even midweek

Check Out A Distillery

Beenleigh, Southport, Varsity Lakes, Miami

If craft spirits strike your fancy, you’re lucky, as Gold Coast distilleries pour all week long. There's something about sipping a warming whisky with friends that makes for a particularly memorable catch up. And across the Gold Coast you'll find a neat selection of producers that swing open their doors to groups.

When the rain pours, Granddad Jacks gin distillery is a good choice to wet your whistle. Despite its high ceiling, you can still hear the pitter patter on the old tin roof.

Opt for a tasting board for a few flavours to savour.

Kid-Friendly Rainy Day Activities

Try Your Hand At Bowling

Coomera, Ashmore, Robina, Surfers Paradise, Tweed Heads

The nostalgia of heading to a bowling alley as a kid truly hits different with little ones. Relive the snazzy shoe hire, clunky ramp to roll the ball down and bumpers that make your strike feel like some kind of pinball grand finale.

If you're after a Gold Coast rainy day activity that can fill quite the hours, our ultimate guide to bowling on the Gold Coast is filled with top spots. My pick is Strike Bowling in Surfers for kids. Because it is set right next to Holey Moley, has a small onsite eatery and the soundtrack is always incredible here.

Games range from $14 to aut $20 for one game, which is not too shabby.

Let The Little Ones Loose At An Indoor Playground

When the rain decides to make a surprise appearance, navigating the world of indoor play becomes essential for keeping the kids entertained. From trampoline parks to ninja academies and inflatable playgrounds, here are the Gold Coast's best indoor playgrounds.

One crucial detail: pack the kids' socks. Many of these places are BYO, with only a few offering them for sale onsite. With that said, there's a wide range of galactic-themed, brightly coloured and even bouncable indoor playgrounds to burn off some energy when the weather's not playing warm.

Entry is often free for under 3s.

Hit Up Miami Marketta

23 Hillcrest Pde, Miami QLD 4220

The beauty of Miami Marketta is that it has all the feels and fresh air of an outdoor venue while being totally covered, so you can enjoy it rain, hail or shine.

There's also a whole heap of free and paid events and gigs, from local live music acts, to drag bingo, life drawing, skateboarding events, art exhibitions and big name bands that adore a drop into this iconic venue. This is one of the best places to head on the Gold Coast on rainy days because the event lineups always brimming and there's a mix of activations to suit families and those flying solo.

Every Wednesday through Saturday an international lineup of street food stalls pop up for a night market.

Munch Down On Bakery Treats

Various locations

Gold Coasters are spoilt for choice when it comes to quality bakeries. From the gut-healing goodness of Burleigh Baker’s sourdough to the luxurious silky goodness of the tarts at Custard Canteen. There's no wrong choice.

For a rainy day hideaway, my pick is almost always Made With Love Bakery in Southport. It's the completely plant-based cafe with pies, scrolls and desserts that'll have you back for more again and again. Since its set on a street with alfresco rooves and welcomes dogs outdoors, you both get to hang out in the dry. While the kids devour the treats cabinet.

Top shelf pastries on gloomy days just make sense.

Hit Up A Restaurant With A Playground

Various locations

If the rain has fooled you into thinking there's no chance of playground adventures, think again. The Gold Coast actually has a heap of restaurants with dedicated playgrounds, with many of them inside. Team this with their kid-friendly deals and your rainy day just reached a new level.

Even when it's pouring with rain, my go-to locales are CSI Club Southport, with its towering timber huts set indoors, Hotel CBD in Varsity, which has a massive space for indoor play fit with a swing set, and next to Crema Espresso at Robina Town Centre. They're all entirely indoors.

FYI, not every restaurant has a playground inside.
