Melbournians, we know it’s chilly (slash sub-zero freezing), but hang in there. It’s nearly the weekend, which means Friday knock-off drinks are within arm’s reach. Plus, this weekend’s line-up is packed with crafty markets, potatoes (we’ll explain) and the very first Great Ocean Rd after-dark festival. You may need the car keys for a few of these, but it’ll totally be worth it.

So listen up guys, because as per usual we’ve got the spread on all things to do this weekend in Melbourne.

All Weekend

Melbourne Cabaret Festival

The undisputed Queen of Cabaret, Dolly Diamond, is bringing Melbourne the ultimate Cabaret show, topped with a bunch of glitz and glam. It’s the last weekend you can experience the amazing array of cabaret performances all at one spot. The line-up is filled with home grown Aussie talent and features the likes of Australian Boys of Motown and Ginger & Tonic.  Get your tickets ASAP for your total cabaret fix.

Docklands is throwing an insane winter celebration this weekend, and it’s going to be lit (like, literally lit). The Docklands Firelight Festival is taking on the winter traditions and chucking a massive fire display each night this weekend (think backyard bonfire on steroids). There’ll be fire-breathing performers, dancers, and musicians, all surrounded by plenty of delicious food. Sounds like the perfect night out to us. Now what tram goes to Docklands again?

United States of Food Tour

Melbournians have been paying tribute to the U.S. of A for a long time. Whether it’s stacked burgers or well-seasoned fries, we’re their #1 fans. The United States Of Food tour (courtesy of local day tour company Urban Adventures) is offering city-goers the chance to taste the best of the States, including pit-stops at some of the best burgers, bagels, doughnuts, arcade games and bourbon bars in town. It’s led by a friendly Yank (obviously) and your grub is included in the price. Bring it on.

The party is gonna start down on the beach (with a massive bonfire) then move back into the town. That Great Ocean Breeze breeze is sure to keep you cool, so pack those Kathmandu coats for a comfy after-dark arts experience.

Ballarat Potato Festival

Technically this one is part of the Ballarat Winter Festival, but we felt it deserved its own entry. There’s no doubt some of the greatest things in the world have evolved from potatoes (loaded fries, mum’s mash and baked potatoes spring to mind). Now we’re getting a whole festival dedicated to the humble spud. The Ballarat Potato Festival will tantalize those taste buds with potato gelato, potato gnocchi and the old faithful, bangers and mash. If you’re a lover of potatoes (who isn’t) then get a crew down to Ballarat this weekend.

Ballarat Winter Festival

Ballarat kinda seems like the place to be this weekend (even if you’re ambivalent about the whole potato thing). The annual Balllarat Winter Festival is coming alive again this Saturday July 1. It’s always an epic festival, with food, wine, activities and heaps of live tunes. There’ll be Christmas in July festivities at Sovereign Hill, adorable penguin marches and dreamy winter dinners. You can take the family or make it a girl’s trip, but Ballarat certainly has it all going on this weekend. Check the website for the full schedule.

Eastland Winter Ice Skating

Channel your inner Chaz Michael Michaels (Blades of Glory, duh) because Eastland has just built a brand new ice skating rink, and it’s time to carve it up. The popular shopping spot has been transformed into a winter wonderland this weekend, complete with Australia’s first custom-built ice-skating rink (sorry not sorry, Sydney). The perfect spot to impress your mates, or make a fool of yourself, you decide. Just watch those fingers on the ice...

Giant Ice Slide

Ice seems to be a running theme in Melbourne this weekend. Forget your morning coffee; the giant ice slide is back and it will have you buzzing for hours. Southbank is embracing winter and bringing the ultimate slip-n-slide for anyone who’s game to try it. Basically, you’ll slide down an incredible icy, uh, slide while sitting in a blown up donut and probably screaming. Go be a kid again, you can thank us later.

Frankston Design & Makers Market

Sunday markets are the best. Period. Especially when they’re held undercover in winter (WINNING). Frankston is amping up the market game this weekend with their Design and Makers Market. You can expect a stunning collection of insane homewares, fashion, jewellery, beauty and much more. To top it all off, they’ve thrown in some food trucks for all your hunger needs. Go hunt some bargains and bring a keen eye, coz the good stuff is always at the bottom of the bucket (pro marketer disclaimer).

Boho Luxe Market

Melbourne is getting their very own dedicated Boho market, and you need to pencil this one in. The Boho Luxe Market is bringing the vibes of the bay right here to the CBD. It’ll showcase the best of Australia’s bohemian talents in fashion, jewellery, homewares and kids’ stuff. Definite winter thread potential. There’s also a free shuttle bus from Chadstone, so you can both start, and end, your day shopping. Life goals right there.
