South Perth: it’s all either overpriced fine dining or chintzy Asian takeaway, right? Wrong! A crop of cool cafes and restaurants are making South Perth a foodie destination to be reckoned with. Loosen your belt guys, here are eight of the best South Perth restaurants and cafes you should check out this weekend.

Gusto Food

Lines snake out of homey Angelo Street cafe, Gusto Food every weekend for their nek level breakfasts. Like stacks of buttery homemade crumpets, served with pear and berry compote and peanut gravel, or potato hotcakes smothered with smoked salmon and avo salsa. Hell, even the humble cheese toastie gets a serious upgrade at Gusto with Emmental cheese and béchamel. Just be prepared to line up early because sorry guys, no reservations on weekends. Definitely one of South Perth's best cafes.

Okay, it’s technically a bar. But with food this good, it would be criminal not to include Hopscotch on this list of South Perth's best restaurants. Another one on Angelo Street, this newcomer is stealing the hearts (or at least, upping the heart attacks) of peeps south of the river, with its decadent tapas. Think tender cubes of pork belly to melt in your (already drooling) mouth, spicy chicken wings with slaw, and earl gray pannacotta for dessert. Wallet thinner than Kate Moss circa 95? Head early in the week for $20 meal and drink pairings, like the lamb shanks and a glass of Barwick Shiraz on Wednesday.

Though the name is a little trendier-than-thou—a fusion of spro, their barista’s nickname for espresso, and YOLO (you only live once)—South Perth cafe Sprolo isn’t about your run-of-the-mill hipster fare. Green juices in mason jars; craft-beer-infused ribs? Yawn. Nope, you’ll find some truly surprising offerings on Sprolo’s menu like the Traditional Singaporean breakfast, with two sous vide eggs and kaya jam, a Malaysian coconut custard, slathered on buttered toast. Grab a cup of their smooth Blacklist brew to wash it down with.

Halo Espresso

Feeling pained dropping yet more cash on soy chai lattes? Halo Espresso will mitigate your guilt, investing 100% of its profits in poverty-alleviating local initiatives. More reasons to go: delicious raw treats, an exclusive coffee blend with chocolate notes, and a decent breakfast menu that’s on until 2pm. Your hangover will thank you later. One of South Perth's best cafes.

Kagura Sushi House

God, how satisfying are bento boxes, with their perfect compartments of assorted deliciousness? They’re like plane food. Except, you know, edible. New joint Kagura Sushi House has already leaped into our list of best South Perth restaurants for doing bento boxes well, with unusual options like grilled eel and red emperor katsu served with dumplings, spring rolls, miso soup and a sesame-dressed seaweed salad. Miso hungry! Anyone else? (Sorry.)

Solo Pizza

Traditional pizza joint, Solo, is run by a cheery Italian couple and could be straight out of Italy: wooden boards, redbrick walls, and cozy lighting, along with pizza that’s arguably some of Perth’s best. But even more delicious than the rich, crunchy-based pizzas, are the desserts made on site at this South Perth restaurant. We dare you to wear your fat pants and have both the delicate authentic tiramisu and the lush Nutella pannacotta. We won’t judge. Solo Pizza is BYO so pack a 6 pack or a bottle of vino—and don’t forget cash!

Manic Espresso

Sure, some may say it’s manic to pay $22 for a glorified cheese toastie. But once you’ve tried Manic Espresso's Crazy Frenchie, a glorious ciabatta creation with steak, swiss cheese, fried egg, and ale-infused drizzle (be still, our arteries!), you’ll happily run off to the loony farm. Plus, if you’re a self-confessed #instawhore, their chia porridge with organic honey, berries and European yoghurt is pretty as a (1080 pixel squared) picture. This is one of South Perth's best cafes. Get amongst it!

Millpoint Caffe Bookshop

Because really—is there anything better in life than a cup of joe and a good book? (You people who wrote ‘I don’t read lol’ on your Myspace profiles are excluded from this rhetorical, BTW.) For everyone else, head to Millpoint Caffe Bookshop for decently priced breakfasts inspired from every corner of the globe. Spanish baked eggs? Tex-Mex wrap? Schezuan prawns? Tick, tick, tick. Best served with a steaming cup of Fiori coffee and a page-turner recommended by one of Millpoint’s knowledgeable staff. This is one of South Perth's best cafes.
