We're at the heart of summer now and we know you're all burning for more Pimms by the Yarra, but we've got a very cultural list of things for you to do this weekend, because life's not all about food and alcohol (yes it is).
David Attenborough’s Museum Alive 3D
Melbourne, rejoice! David Attenborough’s Museum Alive 3D film is coming to Melbourne. If this isn’t the most yearned for the blockbuster of the millennium then cover me in glitter and call me Simon. There will be sessions held at various times so make sure you check the website and also book in advance because it’s forecasted to be hella popular.
The dopest event is about to hit Melbourne University. Shimmerlands is a two-month high-quality programme featuring an outdoor cinema, indoor concert hall, outdoor music amphitheatre, multiple bars (multiple??) and an al fresco dining area boasting some of Melbourne finest restaurants (whaaaaaaat?). It’s all true and it kicked off four days ago so rattle ya dags and head on over there. More info and tickets here.
Burn the Floor
Just when you thought you knew everything there was to know about ballroom dancing (you didn’t at all), an event like Burn the Floor comes along blows your mind. For twenty years, this event has been an international sensation showcasing some of the best Foxtrots and Tangos outside of Step Up 3 in our very own Arts Centre Melbourne. This is a must-see event for the dance-obsessed toe-tappers, and tickets can be bought here.
Silent Disco Tour
In celebration of our very own Kylie™ (back off, Jenner), Guru Dud is visiting Arts Centre Melbourne with his unique Silent Disco Walking Tours. Each participant is given a set of headphones that pump hilarious commentary and upbeat disco hits. You’ll look like an absolute Wally but you’ll have a ball doing it. Tickets are only $10 and can be purchased at their website.
Slide the Square
Nothing quite beats a giant slip’n’slide in the centre of town, which is why we’re so bloody excited for Slide the Square! Providing 75 metres of slippery goodness, this killer water slide is only at Federation Square for twelve days this January and you absolutely need tickets. Get yours here.
Melbourne Musical Theatre Festival
This one goes out to all our city’s biggest thespians. For 23 days, the Athenaeum Theatre will play host to a plethora of well-loved family musical favourites, timeless adult productions and new Australian shows (wahoo)–a first for the Melbourne festival scene. For session times and tickets, hit up their website.
Friday 6 January
Launch Cruise Party
As part of the Melbourne Latin Summer Festival of 2017, you can enjoy a Latin experience on the water this Friday night from 6:30pm, Brazilian style! While you float along the Yarra, enjoy tunes from the biggest Latin DJ names in town, dropping salsa, reggaeton, top 40, bachata and merengue beats while you indulge on delicious tapas. Grab your tickets here!
The Last Circus Strongwoman
This boss biatch is performing circus and sideshow stunts that haven’t been seen for over a century and that will almost definitely cause serious injury if not executed correctly (!!). If sword juggling, axe balancing and chain escaping is your thang, this one can’t be missed. Grab your tickets to this genuinely hazardous, but equally impressive, show here.
Saturday 7 January
Bohemian Paella Cooking Class
Throw-back to your gap year in Europe! The Bohemian Bar and Restaurant is putting on a class-A paella cooking class this Saturday that will take guests on a gastronomic journey through Spanish ingredients and flavours. Learn all about the correct cooking techniques and cookware, and leave an absolute Paella-pro. Enjoy the end product with a complimentary glass of wine (hall yasss). Tickets are $65 and can be purchased here.
Melbourne Latin Summer Festival 2017
If you go to one event this weekend, make it this one. Kings Domain will transform into a hub of Latin culture, music, dance and food this Saturday when the Melbourne Latin Summer Festival kicks off. See performers and parades, INCREDIBLE food vendors, mouth-watering drinks and killer DJs. Entrance into the event is free, but I can tell you now, you’re gonna spend so much cash dolla on delicious yummies, you may as well blow your entire house deposit. Head here for more info.
Sunday 8 January
Aperol Spritz Sunset Sessions
Head beachside this Sunday and forget that most of us have to go back to work tomorrow (sigh) with a classic Melbourne Sunday session. From 3pm every Sunday, Prince of Wales in St Kilda is serving $12 Aperol Spritz so you can sit back and relax while listening to smooth sounds and devouring the mouth-watering menu (diet starts tomorrow). Find all the deets here.
Sunday at the Baths
Every Sunday, Melbourne’s Carlton Baths turn it on for the public with live music, giant pool inflatables, a BBQ (s’later Bunnings) and pool games. Swing by in the early afternoon to catch the beats, and stay until you’re shrivelled up and full of sausages. For prices and more info, head to the website.
