Congrats Melburnians, you’ve made it halfway through this nail-biting winter – and you need to be rewarded for it. This weekend Melbourne has a bunch of markets to visit, a Pokémon Go Party for all you avid hunters, and a Harry Potter Trivia night to challenge your mates in. Melbourne, when did you get so cool? Here are 11 awesome things to do in Melbourne this week.
Finders Keepers Market
The Finders Keepers markets are back! Get ready for over 250 independent art and design stalls, all exhibited under the majestic roof of the Royal Exhibition Building. There’ll be some lovely local stalls from Melbourne, as well as some talented Aussie favourites. You’ll find cashmere woollies, ceramics, and everything in between! To keep you fuelled, you’ll find two bars, coffee stations, as well as some of Melbourne’s best food trucks. Every day will feature a different live DJ on the decks, channelling the good vibes all weekend.
The Sisters' Market is kicking off for the first time this weekend! Running from 10am to 6pm at Melbourne Central, it’s the perfect place to search for some unique finds. Each stall promises to bring you the very best of its craft, be it jewellery or plants. This market will showcase some of Melbourne’s very best!
Bollywood Food Truck Festival
Preston is bringing Bollywood to Melbourne’s north this weekend! At the Bollywood Food Truck Festival, you’ll be able to find some of the best Indian street food in Melbs. To liven up the mood, there’ll also be dancers, Indian music, and classic Bollywood flicks hitting up the big screen. Get ready to gobble on some papadums, 'cause you’re in for a real treat.
Small Fry Fridays at The Rochey
Every Friday night throughout July, the Rochester Hotel is hosting ‘Small Fry Fridays’ from 5.30pm to 7.30pm. Each week a different local Aussie brewer will be featured, and they’ll even shout you a beer! This week Moondog Brewery is taking over the Rochey, and they’re keen to show you a ripper Friday night!
Pokémon Go Party at Beta Bar
Attention Pokémon hunters, we’ve got a quest for you. Beta Bar is hosting a Pokemon Go Party for you to battle it out in teams for the Beta Bar Gym. The top 3 trainers will win $100 each! For those who aren’t avid Pokemon hunters, you’ll also be able to chill out at the bar and play Giant Jenga, Cards Against Humanity, or even Mario Kart. It’s the ultimate place to channel your inner cosplayer.
European Night Market
Madame Brussels lane is lighting up for the first time this winter to bring you the European Night Market. Rug up in your winter woollies and get ready for a night filled with mulled wine, German sausages and freshly baked pretzels! This event is inspired by the Christmas night markets in Manchester, and are bringing a piece of Europe down under. From French crepes to Polish pierogi, there’ll be something for everyone. St Gerry’s will even have a stall set up for your Greek doughnut fix!
Retrolympiad at ACMI
If you’re as pumped for the 2016 Rio Olympics as we are, you’ll get your butts down to ACMI this Saturday. The Retrolympiad will be an evening dedicated to retro video games inspired by the Olympics, skimming from the 80s till the 2000 Sydney Olympics! Get your game face on for a night of 80s trivia and dance-offs, folks. There’ll be a live DJ set, food, and even retro-inspired gaming drinks from the guys at Pixel Alley. The evening will end with a medal ceremony to reward you for your hard work.
Ever wanted to make overly intense eye contact with a stranger? As confronting as this sounds, The Human Connection Movement believe it’s the perfect way to connect with ourselves. 93% of the way we communicate is non-verbal, and Eye Gazing lets you try just that. Head down to the Melbourne City Square and lock eyes with someone you’ve never met before. You’ll find out lots of new things about them…and probably also yourself.
Harry Potter Trivia Night
This one’s for all the Potter nerds (admittedly, I am one of them). If you want to channel your inner Hermione and show off your knowledge, this Harry Potter Trivia Night is the perfect place to find yourself this Saturday. Questions will be from both the books and the movies, so now you can reread them for the 15th time without looking lame. Grab your mates and get your sorting hats on. Drinks and pub meals will be available on the night – but we can’t promise Butter Beer. Make sure you reserve your tickets here; it'll be a big one.
Drake at Beyyoga
Beyyoga is stepping it up a notch and dedicating some classes to Drizzy Drake this Sunday! Suit up in some Drake-inspired workout gear, and get ready to have a gentle groove to Hotline Bling. Be sure to bring a drink bottle and yoga mat to this soul sesh, Drake’s going to get you ready to #werk.
Arts & Crafts Market at Lentil as Anything
Lentil as Anything’s Thornbury venue is popping up an Arts & Crafts Market on the last Sunday of every month. Based off the same philosophy as the restaurant, there’s a pay-as-you-feel hire rate for a stall at the market, and all money is going to charity. If you’re feeling a bit peckish after your market adventures, hit up the restaurant for a tasty chai or delicious meal.
