5 Cafes And Restaurants To Visit This Weekend

The weekend is finally here and you know what that means, it’s time to treat yourself. We vote putting on your eating pants and heading out for a bite in our big city. Which one you ask? Well, we’ve got you covered with this week’s round-up of places to wine and dine. Let the stuffing of the faces begin!

Mr Tom’s

Mr Toms is another shining jewel in Ponsonby Road’s crown. Relatively new to the scene, this central hot spot dishes out all the good stuff. If you’re after comfort food, try their roast duck fat potatoes paired with any one of their pizzas—we are partial to the smoked mushroom, truffle and bocconcini one! As for their drinks menu, their cocktail game is hella strong. It’s safe to say their Street Sours and Barreled Cinnamon cocktails are pretty much liquid works of art.

The Mexican Café

Auckland City

Where does a seriously good taco and a buzzing atmosphere meet for a round of margaritas? The Mexican Café of course! Located just across from the Sky Tower, this place is up a flight of stairs and tucked away from the hustle and bustle of the CBD. This vibrant eatery has fiesta written all over it, with it’s bright and cheerful Mexicana decor. Quesadillas, tacos, enchiladas— you name it, The Mexican Café has all of your favourites dishes with any kind of meat you fancy (as well as options for our vegetarian buddies too). If you happen to be #cleaneating this weekend then opt for a taco bowl salad. Yes, you read that right, it’s a salad in a bowl made entirely of taco shell.

Queenies Lunchroom

Freemans Bay

Brunch fans, we have a little something you’re gonna love. Nestled in Freemans Bay, covered in ivy leaves, lies Queenies Lunchroom—a quaint yet sophisticated café that will satisfy your weekend brunch cravings. We recommend you try the Turkish eggs with babbagonoush or the creamy mushrooms for a top-notch brunch. Or relive your childhood with some dippy eggs and soldiers smothered in your choice of either Marmite or Vegemite.  There’s also an impressive little cabinet full of sweet treats to take home with you—we bet you won’t be able to resist!

Wynyard Quarter

Take a little trip to Sicily this weekend without forking out cash for the flight or grappling with jetlag. At Baduzzi, you’ll be treated to some of the best Italian cuisine in Auckland. The atmosphere here, like it’s food, is inviting, chic and modern yet rustic. You’ll find a whole lot of your favourite Italian dishes here, from freshly made pasta to meatballs - which is fitting seeing as Baduzzi is the Sicilian lingo for meatballs. We guarantee that Baduzzi is the perfect place to eat, tipple and laugh your weekend away!

Weekends have no calories right? In that case, head over to Orleans and treat yo’self to some hearty, deep-fried Americana nosh. Try the crowd favourite Orleans waffle with fried chicken or sink your teeth into a succulent beef po’boy. Make sure you top it all off with a hardshake (that’s right, milkshakes + alcohol). You won’t be disappointed by the flavour choices—there’s everything from salted caramel, chocolate to strawberries and cream.
