9 Free Things To Do In Auckland This May

We feel it’s only fair to warn you that this list could be more exciting than Beyoncé’s pregnancy announcement and your crush liking your latest #fire selfie combined. The most important thing in situations of extreme excitement is to share it with friends, family and everyone else you’ve ever made contact with. Now we’ve got that out of the way read on for the freest fun you can possibly handle this May in Auckland.

#1. Till Death Us Do Part: Fifty Years of Vintage Wedding Style

Forget history books, you can now take a trip back in time through wedding dresses thanks to Til Death Us Do Part: Fifty Years of Vintage Wedding Style. Textile historian Angela Lassig will be there to tell you all about the history behind the dresses and there will even be an auction for the dresses at the end of the show. The proceeds will go to The Aunties, a charity that looks after women and children who have experienced domestic violence. Oh, and it’s all taking place at the gothic mansion, Highwic.

#2. Auckland Symphony Orchestra

Go on a musical journey at Auckland Symphony Orchestra's Concert series starting with “ENIGMA”. The symphony, inspired by the Lord of the Rings, travels along dance halls of Mexico and Gypsy fairs. The show revolves around Edward Elgar's Enigma Variations which come together in a mysterious theme.

#3. Bee Keeping School

Learn some bee talk by heading to Bee Keeping School! All experience levels are welcome to come and learn beekeeping techniques from experienced beekeepers. Based in the Historical Kindergarten in Victoria Park, you will get to work on hives in the park that are part of the Social Sculpture For the Love of Bees—A City Bee Collaboration 2016-2018.

#4. Free Comic Book Day

COMICS COMICS COMICS! Who said comic books are just for kids?  Arkham City Comics bring you FREE Comic Book Day! They’ll even give you two free comics just for turning up. Oh, and if you dress up, they’ll give you another two free comics. Your weekend is sorted.

#5. PumpHouse Theatre Open Day

Get pumped for the PumpHouse Theatre 40th anniversary open day. You’ll find everything from backstage tours, a treasure hunt, costume displays and free entertainment. There will even be giveaways and face painting for the kids. The event runs from 10am to 4pm, with a showcase at 7pm.

#6. Future Realities 

It’s time to up your tech game with Future Realities. At their open day, you can hear about how all this tech stuff is changing the way we live, work and play. You’ll also get to try one of the many demonstrations. Industry experts and New Zealand entrepreneurs working in mixed reality will be running the actual tech conference. 

(Note: you need to buy tickets for the actual conference but the morning session is free)

 #7. Volume: Making Music in Aotearoa

Catch Volume: Making Music in Aotearoa before it’s gone. This is your chance to take a look at personal collections of New Zealand artists such as costumes, awards and memorabilia. You can even have a try in a recording studio or have a look through some records. This is free upon entry into the museum (which is also free for Auckland residents).

#8. Crafternoon Tea Market  

Check out the creative souls in your community at Crafternoon Tea Market. Each market has talented locals displaying their hand-crafted art and designs that are all made with love.  It’s a great place to find some unique pieces.

#9. Laughter Club

Take a trip to your local Laughter Club for all the lols.  Not only will it make you feel good, but it will be an exercise for your whole body and mind that doesn’t require the gym. From breathing exercises to gentle aerobics, enjoy this natural way to reduce stress and increase energy levels.
