Auckland’s Harbour Bridge Is About To Get Lit

By Emma Pickles

Say goodbye to the Harbour Bridge as you know it because things are changing in little ol’ Auckland. The City of Sail’s icon is set to become even more iconic. Forget the current Fifty Shades of Grey scenario in a few months (this may be an understatement) it’ll be technicolour!

We have the Sky Tower, we have the pink bridge but now the Harbour Bridge is set to outshine both with a lit rainbow fit out. 90,000 LED lights, 200 flood lights, 630 solar panels will set alight Auckland’s night lightscape.

It’ll illuminate the City of Sail's best feature—the harbour. This will naturally make your romantic (not-so-secret) date-night spot under the bridge even better.

Don’t you worry greenies! While you may think that Auckland Council shouldn’t be spending millions on fossil fuelled electricity—in a world first it is going to be all solar powered. Yay! Let's keep up this green leadership Auckland. And any excess power will be used for Wynyard Quarter. Thank you, Vector.

To answer everyone’s burning question: Will this reduce the awful traffic and make us want to cross the bridge? Probably not. But at least it'll be pretty to look at.
