8 Free Things To Do In Auckland This August

It's no shame to want to live the life of the well and truly cultured—all while you have the pockets of a peasant. Online shopping, Netflix subscription, brunch...these (plus those 10 margaritas you downed last night) will be the death of us.

However, if your wallet is feeling rather well, light, we come with some pretty good news. There’s a reason we love Auckland so much, and one of the many reasons is the fact that there is always a heap of fun and free things to do for those of us that are—more often than not—financially challenged.

One of these days we promise we’ll learn how to save. Until then, here are eight free things to do in Auckland this August.

Mecca Maxima Auckland Opening

The much-anticipated opening of Mecca Maxima on Auckland’s Queen Street is making its debut this August. Having the willpower to save your pennies may be a challenging task when you’re walking into the number one makeup and skin care haven—but that’s not to say it’s impossible! With free entry, it’d be rude not to mention this monumental day for you joy riders. With free prizes to give away, competitions to enter, and good vibes echoing this new space, we’ll definitely be making an appearance.

When: Thursday, August 3
Where: Mecca Maxima Auckland, 191 Queen Street, Auckland City

Puppy Adoption Day

For all the puppy kisses you could ask for, join the Dog Rescue and Rehoming team and check out the gorgeous pups they’ve got available for adoption. Perfect for those looking to adopt a furry friend, this is your chance to scope out your perfect pup and have some bonding time. Or, just head along to play with a room filled with cute animals—because is there really any thing else we’d rather be doing? We think not. Bring some old dog food, treats, blankets or anything else you’ve got lying around the house that’s not needed—ya may as well give them to needing hands paws.

When: Saturday, August 26
Where: Pet Kiwi, 381 Great North Road, Grey Lynn

Photo Exhibition: The Story Of Your Morning Cup

Ever wondered where that morning coffee really comes from? The story of your morning cup showcases coffee education led by Fairtrade New Zealand in Papua New Guinea. One for the aesthetic eye, the images captured by photographer Josh Griggs shine light on a monumental issue that deserves awareness. With Kokako Organic Coffee and Fine & Dandy Tea on offer, this event invites you to BYO your own coffee cup.

When: Friday, August 4 and Saturday, August 5
Where: Kokako Organic Coffee, 9 Charles St, Mount Eden

Theatre Of Life

Here’s something for all you soon-to-be chefs! The Auckland’s Art Gallery is showcasing a free screening of Theatre Of Life. This is a film that feeds your spirit as well as your appetite. Watch renowned chef Massimo Bottura work his magic during the Milan 2015 World Fair—yum! This is a true story where you see Massimo invite 60 of the world’s best chefs to join him to cook for refugees and the homeless of Milan, using only food wasted at the fair. The doco is so remarkable, we’d pay to see this one—it just so happens to be totally free!

When: Sunday, August 20
Where: Auckland Art Gallery, Wellesley Street East, Auckland City

Street Eats With Holden Spark

Teaming up with Restaurant Month on what may be the largest foodie day of the year, Street Eats is serving up a myriad of different international styles and flavours for their take on global street food. An event like no other, this year the popular event features a street art installation, urban beats and dance to compliment the dancing that’ll be happening in your mouth. There’s also a Holden Spark up for grabs, so if this urban car has your name on it, we recommend heading into the heart of the city.

When: Saturday, August 19
Where: Shed 10, Queens Wharf, Auckland City

One Day In France

The One Day In France festival graces Shed 10 this August and consists of a market with 35 stalls offering all things French. From pastries, coffee, food, charcuterie, chocolate, crepes, as well as fashion and language lessons, you can even try your hand at pétanque with a glass of Pastis (how it should be done!). With French short films and local music, you’ll feel like you’ve been transported to France in no time. If you’re anything like us and you just love to feel French, then you technically don’t need to spend a dime! Just soak up the views, watch everyone getting their Parisian vibes on and enjoy what is set to be a b.e.a.utiful day.

When: Saturday, August 26
Where: Shed 10, Queens Wharf, Auckland City

Step Up Sky Tower

Ideally, we take the lift…but when it’s for charity, we’re good to take the stairs. And when it’s for a cause as worthy as Leukaemia & Blood Cancer, we RUN the stairs. Our favourite event is back and, although challenging, this may quite possibly be the most rewarding thing one can do. The Step Up Sky Tower Stair Challenge invites you and five of your work friends to fundraise for this great cause and complete a very unique challenge. Last year, more than $412,000 was raised, and this year, the team are hoping to raise even more. I’m sure it hasn’t ever crossed your mind to club the tallest building in the Southern Hemisphere but we only live once, right?

Where: Auckland Sky Tower, Auckland City

Wynyard Quarters 6th Birthday

It’s Wynyard Quarter’s 6th birthday—they’ve grown up so fast! This day is suitable for yourself, the family, or perhaps a great idea for those struggling to suss the first-date location. It’s sure to be a treat with some pretty damn exciting things on offer. From circus games and some of Auckland’s finest foods, to tango classes and a much-needed screening of Moana, this birthday tackles all other birthday parties to the ground––in the funniest way possible. If you’re an early bird, check out the CrossFit session that starts at 8.30pm, and if you’re more of a night owl, then the late screening of Moana is definitely something for you. And we haven’t told you the best part…it’s free! Get amongst it, pals.

When: Saturday, August 5
Where: Wynyard Quarter, Auckland City
