Right in the middle of café central, a newcomer has opened and it’s just what Herne Bay was missing. Beatrix brings European flair and fare to Jervois Rd.
Owner Mariette van Steensel missed a taste of her new homeland of New Zealand. After working for years as a manager in hospo in Holland and then London, she followed her heart to a little island far, far away from home. And, we are damn lucky she did. After a few years' stint in another industry she had to admit to herself that ‘hospitality, it’s in your blood.’ She embraced the Kiwi spirit, finally got the courage to DIY—and Beatrix was born.
Pop into Beatrix and you’ll see what she meant—you’ll be greeted by Mariette’s warm smile and sunlight streaming through the glass doors. The calm, blue-themed décor, flower adorned tables, mismatched chairs, and hanging bulbs give it an eclectic, yet calming feel. It’s the perfect spot to sip on your organic Kokako coffee and people watch the day away.
Beatrix embraces that mid morning 10 to 11-o’clock time when you’ve missed breakfast but it’s not quite time for lunch yet...it’s brunch time! Laze your day away and have brunch whenever you like. Just like the Europeans do!
It’s not just Dutch that she brought to this menu. It is a melting pot of cuisines and flavours, just like Auckland itself. Yep, there’s something to excite everyone.
Beatrix’s European breakfast is a brilliant mix of Dutch and French—with a croissant, Dutch honey cake, fresh fruit, free-range poached eggs, Emmental cheese and glazed champagne ham—you’ll have the perfect balance of sweet and savoury.
The stand out is the Eastern Eggs—two perfectly poached eggs laid on a pile of spiced chickpeas, tomatoes and capsicum, and topped off with a delicious dollop of homemade labneh.
For those of with a relentless sweet tooth, the fluffy pancake laid in a generous pool of blueberry compote, maple, vanilla mascarpone and candied orange zest is sure to satisfy. Or, if you’re a salted caramel fiend opt for the grilled banana, crispy bacon and salted caramel route. This also comes in a mini size for your mini-me.
The menu changes to keep up with the seasons, so get in quick for the smashed avo on toast with a twist while you can! Add halloumi or house smoked salmon for a little extra indulgence.
To create the stellar cabinet, Beatrix has collaborated with the Auckland’s best including pastries from French connoisseurs Phillipe’s, and bread from the organic, sourdough masters Bread and Butter. So make sure to grab a snack for later.
Take a chance, stray away from your usual because this could just be your new local.
