Secret Weekend Escapes From Auckland

We don’t know about you, but our middle name should be ‘non-stop-Nancy’. Constantly battling through deadlines, emails and all the other daily grinds that fill our weekdays is not, in fact, all it’s cracked up to be.

Now, we know we’re not the only ones who whole-heartedly live for Saturday and Sundays, but sometimes a weekend spent mimicking the personality of a sloth isn’t always a great use of time. With this in mind, and with our weekend bags itching to be brought out of the closet, why don’t we fill you in on some of Auckland’s best secret weekend escapes instead? For that much-needed break, here are our top six.

Glamping At Phoenix Valley

If you don’t book this place for the night, we will—soz! Though surely you can’t blame us? What, with your very own secluded and private luxury tent complete with a king-sized bed, log burner and not to mention your very own private deck, glamping at Phoenix Valley really is the creme de la creme! Not only does your private deck look out onto the fir tree forest, towering cliffs and trickling stream, it also comes complete with a steaming, hot bath! Say whaaaat?! With no fear of the noise of Auckland traffic from your tub, the only thing you’ll be hearing, are the bird calls from the resident tui.

Rings Beach

Driving up the dirt track, you may think you have taken a wrong turn. Trust us, you’ll want to keep going. As you pass meadows of resident goats, donkeys and pigs, your journey will lead you to the top of a hill, where Kaepelli’s Bed & Breakfast awaits, along with the best panoramic and stunning views of the ocean and beyond. Soak it all in from your own deck, along with fantastic hospitality from owner Jill. In the morning, enjoy a homemade breakfast from the outdoor breakfast cabin, before taking to the neighbouring beaches and devouring an infamous ice-cream from Kuaotunu General Store!

The Lost Spring

Every girl and guy loves a good pamper sesh. Don’t even try and deny it, boys! Who wouldn’t enjoy a warm seashell massage complete with sweet, smelling oils or a dip in the 100% pure thermal spring waters? The Lost Spring Thermal Resort in Whitianga  is a complete go-to for all things relax, relax and relax. With so many packages and pamper packs to choose from, guests are sure to leave feeling as light as a feather. Accommodation can also be arranged, meaning that your completely wound-down self has a place to stay after a busy day of doing absolutely nothing. We don’t feel guilty at all.

Wainu Country Retreat

In just a 30-minute drive from central Auckland, your fine self could be staying in the incredible 45-acre grounds of Wanui Country Retreat. If rolling fields and farmland doesn’t sound secluded and just what you need, we don’t know what does. With a few accommodation options to choose from, we simply can’t look past the private, Waterfall lodge. With phenomenal views of the waterfall all to yourself, this is the ultimate ‘room with a view.’ Looking for a bit of animal lovin’? The retreat has plenty of resident farm animals that would be more than happy to share your brekkie with you!

Fossil Bay Lodge

Waiheke Island

Once you step onto the ferry to Waiheke, you know that you’re in for a treat. Fossil Bay Lodge are making your trip all the better with their cute-as-a-button cottages and lotus belle tent accommodation. Take a break from Auckland’s hustle and bustle, as you lay your head down in your very own fairytale cottage or spacious and magical tent. With tranquil surroundings, gorgeous location and ample activities to get stuck into, your stay couldn’t be more glorious if you tried.

Matakana Castle

One word—wow. Matakana Castle, you have truly taken our breath away. This secluded and gob-smackingly beautiful ‘castle’ is not only set in the beyond beautiful Matakana region, it also boasts some of the best views of the surrounding ocean and greenery. For a little slice of heaven just an hour away from central Auckland, you’ll never feel more away from bustling city life if you tried. This stunning art deco building is perfect to rest your head after a busy day of perusing the markets, local area and beaches.
