With images of sugar-crusted cronuts, crispy waffles topped with even crispier bacon and bounty smoothies erupting with cherry coulis popping onto my instagram feed before 10am, good intentions can be easily thwarted. Thankfully, there’s a conscious shift in breakfast menus to cater for those who want to fuel their bodies with premium whole foods that taste scrumptious too.
So, follow us as we lead you away from temptation… Seriously. Step away from the cronut. Here are 10 of Perth's best healthy breakfasts.
It’s a tough call as to whether Aussie hip hop artist Drapht does music or food better (his latest single Dancin’ John Doe is so.much.fun), because the man is passionate about both and it translates. Head to his hipster haven Solomon’s Cafe where whole food is king, with ‘honour your food' scrawled over the walls. It’s also tough to choose which of the organic breakfasts will be pounced upon (those with gluten and dairy allergies rejoice, there’s not a crumb or drop of either in the entire menu), but try the Kaled Green Eggs and Ham piled atop the delicious pumpkin paleo toast which will have both your soul and body honoured fo sho. One of Perth's best healthy breakfast spots!
After the divine cleanse of salt water, wander up from Trigg Beach and think about how good life is from hot spot Yelo. Pumping with surfers, joggers and power walking yummy mummies, the cafe dishes out plenty of healthy options. If you can’t find a free stool, everything is served in takeaway containers so you can carry your bowl of goodness back down to the beach. Mix in with the healthy crowd and grab the acai bowl, blended with coconut water and sprinkled with Yelo’s homemade granola and fresh fruit.
While the coffee here has a cult following, the food is equally worth visiting at Claremont's Typika. While the rocky road cronuts test our wellness mettle, the sin-free black sticky rice with mango is delicious. The glutinous pyramid of black sticky rice is sweetened with fanned strips of fresh mango with creamy coconut yoghurt accompanying the dish. The perfect kick start to your day and one of Perth's best healthy breakfast spots.
Pixel Coffee Brewers
Pixel Coffee Brewers is the cutest little place in town, plus they’re serving up healthy meals amongst the lusciously layered cakes. The small menu matches the small interior, but healthy options stack up with the acai bowl, the grain porridge (gluten-free) and the omelette piled high with smoked salmon and crunchy greens. After your nutritious nosh, you'll be feeling #smug all day.
If you can tear yourself away from the Balinese-style interiors shop at Chinta (I’ll have one of everything!), head into the tranquil, secret garden out back and feast your senses with one of Perth's best healthy breakfasts. The long list of juices provides quite the dilemma, but heads up, we’ve tried the new Coconut Colada and it’s a holiday in a glass. Pair it with the menu’s new addition—the vegan breakfast (smashed avo, field mushrooms, homemade baked beans, wilted spinach, thyme-roasted cherry tomatoes and beetroot toast)—and you’ve pretty much nailed your two fruit and five veg like it ain’t no thang.
Little Shop of Plenty
With locally sourced and organic food aplenty, Maylands cafe Little Shop of Plenty is heaving with healthy options to get your day off to a cracking start. Warm your insides with the paleo plate and nourish your body with veggies, avocado, gut-friendly sauerkraut, mushroom braise and a cashew nut “crème fraiche”. For a lighter option, grab one of the revolving flavours of chia pudding or have dessert for breakfast with a tub of Cocowhip. If you're after a healhty breakfast in Perth, this place is well worth a visit.
The Market Juicery
The arcade location doesn’t inspire one to while away a morning there, but The Market Juicery is the place to go for a big ole cup of nutrients on the run. I’m not sure any more vitamins could be squeezed into the Creamy Green with spinach, avocado, banana, celery, mango, cucumber, cinnamon and walnuts whizzed up with a choice of six milks (they have almond! High five! Unless you have a nut allergy #awkward). It is so creamy, so scrumptious and so good for you. Get it.
Little Bird Cafe
Mirror, mirror on the wall, who is the fairest of them all? The breakfasts being plated up at Little Bird Cafe are the prettiest we ever did see. Edible flowers and perfectly placed sliced fruits adorn bowls of bircher (vegan lemon and coconut with lemon curd, fresh apple, strawberry and micro coriander—swoon), overnight oats (cardamom, coconut and vanilla with banana, poached persimmon and raw salted caramel drizzled over it—drool) and takeaway pots of chia pudding. One of Perth's best healthy breakfast spots!
Heaven Raw Cafe
Fremantle Environmental Resource Network is a community-run plight to inspire sustainable living. Get hyped up on what you can do in your own backyward, then feed your face at their raw, vegan cafe, Heaven Raw Cafe. Never touch a powder-based chai latte again once you’ve drunk Heaven’s cold-pressed coffee and chai combo, sweetened with vanilla and coconut nectar with cashews providing the creaminess. There are juice and smoothie options to suit all palates and choose any one of the veggie-laden meal options for a whopping dose of goodness.
Once upon a time, our humble city centre was awash with soulless chains proffering flaccid croissants and flavourless cakey muffins as breakfast choices. Fortunately, that time has well and truly passed with places such as Panache Cafe serving up full flavoured and fresh food for our suit-donning friends. The almond milk iced lattes and poached eggs nestled in green breakfast bowls will get you powered up for your morning meeting. Or, go for a quickie with the paleo muffins fresh out of the Panache oven each morning that will make those foam balls masquerading as baked goods of yesteryear seem like just a bad dream. Panache is one of Perth's best healthy breakfast spots.
